Apparently, even the Nintendo USB connector can cause a "blue screen of death." Rappateng on Flickr has experienced the issue along with some others in his write up and use of the connector. From his account: "The connector made such a mess of my laptop during the install... Try and shutdown, and my poor laptop just dies at a blue screen (pictured) until I hold in the power button to end its life."
Any others having problems with the wifi dongle?

I've had one of those wifi connectors for
awhile and the only problem I have is I
need to disable my software firewall to get
it to work properly. It's such a simple
device, I think the author has problem with
his USB ports and not the device.

Nope, my USB ports are fine and working dandy. I did have some better luck installing the USB connector on a desktop, but that wasn't how I intended on using this little doohickie.
A buddy of mine is having similiar results with the USB connector, while I hear many others installing and setting the thing up without a hitch. I really think it was just some sort of conflict with my laptop's wireless adapter and the USB connector.
I haven't had time to really research it further lately, but I'll play around more this weekend.

My biggest problem with it is that I can't use it. When I bought my computer (which at the time was state of the art and incidentally it still couldn't be improved hardware wise, except for maybe if it wasn't put together by the morons at IBM) the choices of OS I could choose from were Windows 98 or Windows ME. I heard too many horror stories about ME so I went with 98 and never upgraded it to xp. This was the only thing holding me back from getting the "dongle" until I read this article. I still think it suks that Nintendo won't make a w'98 driver for this thing but I suppose I should be glad because it probably would've totally f-ed up my computer.
The whole WiFi ds playing is a great idea that's being launched so carelessly that it makes me wonder what Nintendo is testing out with it and why do the consumers have to be guinea pigs? Don't they have people to test this stuff? And who's bright idea was it to make McDonald's the wifi hotspot partner? They couldn't get starbucks or some crap like that? Who wants french fry oil on their ds touchscreen?

Well, if you're still running win98 there I think the USB connector is the least of your problems :)
Just kidding, but you should seriously consider upgrading if your system can handle XP.
I don't agree that Nintendo is carelessly launching their wifi service. As frustrated as I am with my experience I know there are just way too many variables up in the air, and as much as Nintendo is trying to account for all these there are always going to be those surprises issues that just pop up.
Even on Xbox Live I've experienced connection anomalies where some users just couldn't connect to each other. Most likely a NAT issue sure, but how you fix it is the real problem.
Like I said before in my case I believe something on my laptop is allergic to the adapter and that's what's causing the havoc. Maybe Nintendo did the majority of testing on desktops, as I imagine that is where the adapter is going to be used. It's more likely that people with laptops are going to have wireless routers (stop me if I'm making too much of an assumption).
I look forward to Nintendo really nailing down and improving their WiFi service as well as releasing more and more games that take advantage of it. Just the whole concept is still amazing - we are playing wirelessly against each other on a portable! So despite its shortcomings how frickin great is that!
See on-line (hopefully)

It's just so annoying to hear people on extremly outdated operating systems complain about compatibility with the dongle. YOU ARE BEHIND THE TIMES. UPDATE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM! That's like someone with a car from the 80s complaining that their manufacturer doesn't have an in-dash navigation system compatible with their car.

i got the wifi connector early last month. i didn't have any problems installing it. i only play animal crossing over wf, but haven't had any problems to speak of. i'm so thankful for it since my home network is wired and it would be a huge pain to drive to a hotspot everytime i wanted to play online (i live in a pretty rural area). good luck Rappateng!

About the whole "why isnt the hotspot partner starbucks?" thing. For one, starbucks already hosts free wi-fi for laptops (and it work for the DS as well), so if you prefer playing at starbucks, feel free. I dont know why they chose mcdonalds specifically, but it probably has to do with there being a mcdonalds like every 50 feet in big cities.

The Nintendo USB Dongle also has issues with systems that have a 64bit processor (like mine). The system seems to freeze after a random period and forces a reboot of the machine. This is quite annoying, because I can't leave the USB Dongle in my pc, because it will freeze up after a while (even when not playing). I have to insert it when I want to play and be careful I don't play for too long or it will freeze again.
I really hope that Nintendo will address this issue and release an updated driver or something. (I don't run 64bit Windows by the way..)
