Reggie talks smack

ReggieIn a brand-spanking-new interview today, Nintendo frontman, Reggie Fils-Aime, talks all things Nintendo with the folks over at News.com.

In the interview, Reggie talks up Nintendo's key "New Year's Resolutions:"
  1. Keep our eyes on the prize
  2. Keep the "mass" in mass audience
  3. Bring as many consumers into the industry as possible
  4. Turn game development into a democracy of good ideas
  5. Improve the way consumers play and get into games
That's cute marketing-speak and all, Reg (can we call you, Reg?), but let's bring on the smack!

Reggie Smack: "The DS is outselling PSP across the world. The DS is also generating huge buzz in the blogosphere."

Ah, he should have just called out DS Fanboy by name, but we're honored. Anyway, that's not really smack-talk. Say something to make Sony cry.

Reggie Smack: "The fact is, we have a number of not only worldwide but even U.S.-centric million-unit selling games, and Sony doesn't. The buzz for the DS is huge and growing, and the most anticipated handheld titles are on our platform, not on Sony's."

Poor Sony.

2. Well written Ed. Very funny.

Yea. Right now the only thing Sony's got on nintendo (when it comes to the portable games) is a really good Burnout game. That's it.

How come they never released the Burnout games on the GameCube? That was one of the only reasons I got a ps2 instead of the cube. That & Katamari Damacy; or else I would've gotten an xbox if I just wanted Burnout. Sony really has to make some more sturdy hardware, especially their portable hardware first. Then they have to get themselves a psp catalog that's as impressive as the one they got for the ps2. Then they might have a chance of competing. Don't forget, microsoft is now saying that they're interested in the portable market too. An X-Box mini would really give the psp a run for it's $.

4. It really is true. I've not bought a PSP because well...they don't provide anything I can't do with something else. PSP games are generally available in some form on the PS2.

I'm thinking PSP stuff will just end up best played through an emulator.

5. Not to start a fight, ( even though i'd like to) the PSP's one screen is twice the size of both the ds's screens, besides who wants graphics that can only compare to that of nintendo 64? no thanks.

The PSP also plays movies, music, goes on the internet, live TV! and as for the ds chatting, i have aim on my PSP thank you very much, but i am going to get a nintendo ds, because i am tired of my gba sp.

The ds does have a FEW decent games and mini games, and don't get me wrong it is a very nice design, but i prefer Sony's PSP better, besides who cares about the sales stats, nintendo has had more time on the portable market, imagine if microsoft released a xbp ( XboxPortable) they would have no chance against nintendo or sony for that matter, the hype over the PSP and ds were tremendous but proved to be overhyped in both cases, the PSP just turns more heads it seems, because of the fact so few are out and about, but sony has held it's ground with the PSP even with doubtful people misjudging it, i believe just like the ps2, the PSP will overtake nintendo, and btw look at the ps2 compared to the gamecube, not even a competition, and then the PS3 against the revolution, not a fair fight either.

comparing PSP and the DS to me is like comparing honda ( nintendo) to Caddilac (sony).

Dont get me wrong the ds is fun but i prefer the Sony PSP.

Thanks for your time.

6. yes this is right that they would have no chance against nintendo or sony for that matter.

7. Sorry about that folks but I got sent two "comment confirms" for the same post.

I still can't believe people are still arguing about "what's better". It's all a matter of opinion (sure they have their pros & cons) but I think if Microsoft came out with a(n innovative) portable xbox, it would definitely steal quite a bit of the market from Sony and some of Nintendo's too.
Both the DS and PSP are allot of fun to play with. Both have a couple of really excellent games (and a ton of bad ones) but I have to say I'm more impressed with the DS' selection overall. It definitely has the most unique games. The PSP on the other hand does have the most impressive built in functions even if there are a few too many extra steps to really make it cool. And even though most of those functions (and then some more) can even be jacked into the DS with third party hardware (like the gba movie/media player), the PSP still has a nicer screen. So how come I ebayed my PSP? It just feels too fragile for a portable. Even without my already great distrust for sony portable electronics of any sort (just allot of problems with them in the past), I could tell that the hardware was a little too flimsy for the way I run around. In that respect, comparing the DS to PSP is like comparing apples and lemons but that's just my personal preference; mostly because I got butterfingers.
But to tell you the truth, even though I trust the DS' sturdiness (and battery charge) a hell of allot more, I don't carry it around with me everywhere either. The DS suffers from the same pituitary gland problem that the PSP seems to suffers from. I just can't stuff either of these things comfortably in my pocket. In that respect they both remind me of the Game Gear: early 90s flop by atari (or was it sega) which was an attempt to steal the portable game market from Nintendo.
So in short, while they're both really cool, neither of these things have replaced the gba (although my wife recently replaced mine with the micro) and they never will until they get it down to a size that's more comparable to a mobile phone rather than the old car phones. Then it might save space the way my micro does. Where I used to carry the gba sp (and an extra game usually), a book, and a walkman, now I just have the micro & gbamp which can function as all those things and plays movies & photos. The only pain is that it sticks out of the gba a little and you still have convert the music and movies, but it's no more a pain than converting for a Sony portable.
That's also why I speculate Microsoft would take over in the portable arena, if they tried their hand and made an x-pod or whatever. I think it'd have all the functions people want in their pocket and it would fit there too.
