The recent issue of Famitsu cites great promotions, demo stations, non-gamer appeal, download stations, and great
games as the five reasons why the Nintendo DS has sold so well in Japan. All in all, pretty convincing reasons. But we
want to know from a fan's perspective, why did you buy a DS? What was it's biggest selling point?[via Joystiq]

The games.
Well, that and the fact that I am a Nintendo fanboy. Nintendo could package bricks and I would probably still buy.

But I am elated with the games that have come out so far. Especially Mario Kart.

I bought a DS because better graphics aren't the only thing that hooks me on a portable system (I'm looking at you PSP).
I'll admit I was skeptical about the touch screen's potential at first, but I think it's proved its value several times over. My DS gets the same if not more play time than my consoles at this point.
Probably doesn't help that Electroplankton finally showed up from Amazon yesterday ;)

I feel like buying a DS and playing New Super Mario Bros. should be required for anyone who was raised on Super Mario side scrollers. Shame on you if you are not excited about this game.

New (old) controls, pick&play value... Some console games were getting too demanding and only few felt worth the time and effort.

I got mine because the psp is the ubber suxxors when it comes to games. The only cool one that's coming out for the psp is Monster Hunter. I mean, c'mon! Would you rather steal cars or Do surgery!? How 'bout being a navy seal (which really needs 2 analog sticks) or be an ace attorney!? The games for the DS are just more thought out. When I game on the road, I want crazy cool games that have never been thought of... ever. Not some rehashed stuff I can have a better experience on my ps2 or Xbox360.

The very inovative concept and of course
for mario kart !
I was interested in the PSP, because of the great
graphics potential, but it seams than the developers
prefere to port existing ps2 game which is patetic for a new system ...

Great games that are different from other consoles. I have been gaming since the NES days but of late have been lazing off due to the constant streams of clones. The moment the DS was announced I was excited because of the touch screen. Just see some of the games on PDAs (Snails, Worms, Tennis Addict, Bejeweled) and there is no doubt that good developers can take advantage of the bottom screen. The problem was giving them time to produce those games.
So the triple assault of Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing WW and Sonic Rush finally got to me and I finally purchased the DS last month.

Was in the Electronics area saw the DS and Mario Kart (A big MK afficianado) and figured what the heck That was one week ago today and I am so glad Fry's Electronics tried to screw me over. I got Super Mario 64DS and nintendogs as well now.

1. It's a nintendo product!
2. C'mon, a new gaming sensation (through the touch screen & mic). If you're a real gamer... ~_^
3. As has been pointed out: games aren't all about graphs
4. Much better games (as well due to the new gaming experience provided by the system)
5. All of my brothers are nin-boys, so they would be buying it. Combining that with the download accessory results in an unresistable urge of purchasing it ^_^
... those are most of them I guess... pretty much the same as the others have said ... *lack of originality* i_i

I didn't actually plan on getting a DS, I was going to wait it out to see if any good games showed up. Instead, on the european launch some local electronic chains had a price battle and actually sold DS's for half the price on launch day. So I and five of my friends went and bought our DS's :)
I'm very pleased with my purchase, much because of Animal Crossing

Bought it first day b/c it had wireless, it had a touch screen, it had two screens, and it had stero sound (with an ear phone jack).
These sorts of things were and still are a huge jump for portable gaming. It might have took almost a year but now it's got some of the most innovative and fun games in the Market.
