Metroid Prime: Hunters beta test feedback

Our level of anticipation for Metroid Prime: Hunters, Nintendo's forthcoming first-person blasting, bounty hunting, morph-balling, Wi-Fi connecting, pad jumping, pirate bashing extravaganza, is clearly reeling out of control. When we're not scouring the Internet for tasty globules of information, we're subliminally influencing others to do it for us. Naturally, we were quite pleased to be pointed in the direction of an article written by the ever-grimacing NOA_Andy over at Nintendo's website.

It details some of his experiences with beta testing Hunters over the Wi-Fi connection service and, perhaps unsurprisingly given his involvement with Nintendo, all of them are good. The lobby system is said to be greatly improved over that of Mario Kart DS, allowing the user to choose when to stop searching for opponents and when to actually start playing. The issue of lag didn't come up either, though given the small scale of the test, it may yet to come back to haunt us when the game launches towards the end of March.

Things sound promising, but we're still quite interested in seeing more of the game's single-player side. Actually, let's turn that into a question: Are you buying the game primarily for Wi-Fi play, or do you want a strong solo experience too?

[Thanks Will!]

1. well sure the wifi multiplayer looks very exciting, and i'll really enjoy it when it arrives - but metroid is all about lonely exploration, as has been said many times, and the game simply won't feel like a complete entry in the series without a robust single-player. it will rather feel like a peripheral (but strong) series sidebar, much like metroid pinball. to quote ign re ikaruga: my frothing demand for this game increases daily.

2. The wi-fi play is a great plus, and I'm sure will be even better than Mario Kart's but I really buy games for the single player experiance, never is multiplayer a selling point for me. It's a nice incentive but if I pay 50 bucks for a game I don't want them to skip out on an enthralling story for me to enjoy on my own. I'm pretty confident in the metroid franchise though. This is a must have title for the DS.

3. Supposedly the single player experience will be there, but i doubt it. honestly i dont really care. I only want to explore the metroid world in 2d...ill frag some ass in 3d.

4. I'm just wondering, when metroid prime was going to be released, everyone was going to hate it because it was going to be a fps. hunters is what everyone feared that prime was going to be. Why is it getting a lot of praise?

5. Metroid has always been about the single player experiance. Whether it was in 2D or in 3D, SNES or GCube. This game seems to promise a deep story and an incredible multiplayer experiance. I buy a game for the single player experiance, but its the multiplayer that keeps me coming back to play some more. Hopefully Hunters will provide both a deep a single player experiance and a kick @$$ multiplayer frag fest.

6. I think online play is important. Hopefully the new lobby system works better than Mario Kart. However, if you have a clan like this one http://s13.invisionfree.com/Blue_Diamond_Clan/index.php?act=idx
the lobbys are easier to deal with. I guess Nintendo just likes making us work the hard way and start our own communities.

7. When I first heard there was going to be a portible Metroid Prime game, I was over-delighted. A Metroid Prime title? In my f-ing POCKET? I enjoyed both Metroid Prime games to death, and being able to play a Prime game on the go or while I was on break at school, what a treat!

Sadly, as it turned out, it was going to be multiplayer only. But, that's still awesome! Although I won't get to explore a vast world whereever I may be, I'll still be able to play friends in a straight-up deathmatch, no problem. It'll be fun even if they don't go for a Metroid Prime single-player like we know it today.

8. You can't play online all the time. There needs to be a strong one-player mode. That's what the series has been built on. Multiplayer modes should be dessert, not the main course.

9. Something doesn't seem right. He says that the lobby system is vastly improved over Mario Kart's, but only mentions that you can stop searching for opponents when you want to. He didn't say whether you could chat/voice chat in the lobby, or create rooms with specific settings to join, or anything that resembles a real lobby system instead of a random selection.

I hope we'll be able to see the inclusion of a real lobby system soon. I don't know the technical specifications behind WFC but it surely there must be some way to make a real gaming lobby.

10. Single Player! I might go for some deathmatch in a multiplayer game occasionally, but the DS is a PORTABLE gaming system. If I can only play a game within 30ft of my router, then it isn't very portable. Give me a solid single-player campaign. If they release the game with emphasis on the multiplayer and weak single-player, then I will not buy it. I use the DS for gaming on the go, and if I want to play a FPS at home I can play Serious Sam or some Half-Life 2 on my PC. If I want to play Metroid, I'll play Super Metroid on my SNES.

11. What are you talking about Brody? Multiplayer only? Are you crazy? The online portion of the game is a RECENT addition (main cause of the delay?) of course the game has single player and I expect it to be pretty sweet based on what I've seen in all the videos of the game.

One of the latest updates about the game talks about how you're competeing with the other hunters to get relics or whatever from different worlds and if one of them does get one you have to hunt them down and get it back. Sounds pretty sweet to me.

12. Well, of course I'd want a strong single-player mode. I wouldn't consider it even a good game if MPH didn't have a good single player mode. The multiplayer seems to be pretty good being "better" than Mario Kart DS's online play, but Metroid has always been about he single player experience, and that's where I think most of the judging will take place. In fact, I think that if Hunters had the BEST online multiplayer mode out there and the single player mode sucked, it would be one of the worst disappointments that Nintendo has ever released. But I have faith in Nintendo and I believe that MPH will have one of the best single player modes on the DS. Let's hope that they don't disappoint.

14. Multiplayer only? It has a single player silly. Have you been living under a rock? I'm looking forward mostly to the single player experience, I like the multiplayer though, and I'm going to play it after I've spent at least a few hours playing the single player mode.

15. If the singleplayer is half as good as Mertroid prime or echoes ill be satisfied. the echoes multiplayer was a joke. (hated the samus clones) The demo for hunters was actually kinda fun. im digging the new control scheme. plus now they got the new bounty hunters.

16. "Multiplayer only? It has a single player silly. Have you been living under a rock? "

The Unreal Tournament games have "single player", too.
I don't really expect the single player game to be similar to the Gamecube versions.... I hope I'm wrong.

17. Actually he did comment on the lag issue in the article, if not for a moment.

"The action itself was spot-on. I didn't experience any lag at all"

18. After beating MarioKart DS I didn't really play it much anymore because the online play left some stuff out. The lobbying should be a little more manual in that people should be able to talk and choose manually who and when you race. If Metroid fixes these problems and there are enough people online to play then I would certainly love to play on Wi-fi, but without a story to get you into it multiplayer seems very shallow without anything behind it.
