Japanese sales charts: DS just scraping by

It's the lowest form of wit.The hardware sales figures for the week ranging from 23 January to 29 January have arrived and we simply had to share them and the rather shocking turn of events they reveal. The ranking, according to number of units sold, is a follows:

  • DS: 106,081
  • PSP: 30,657
  • PS2: 24,580
  • GBA SP: 5,946
  • GB Micro: 3,042
  • Gamecube: 3,036
  • Xbox 360: 1,976
  • GBA: 179
  • Xbox: 128
As you can see, the DS is still having a hard time being accepted by the Japanese public, barely making an impact after selling more units than every other console combined. Clearly, this abysmal failure is indicative of the DS' embarrassing lack of trendy multimedia features, cutting-edge graphics and the ability to play the Will Smith classic, Hitch. Hopefully, Nintendo will learn from this sorry state of events and start focusing on the things that matter.

Man, after seeing this I feel ashamed to be a Nintendo fan, I mean Nintendo screwed up big time with the DS, if only it was more like the PSP. Everyone wanted a system with rehashed ports, why won't they ever learn? And look at those Brain Training games! Who's gonna play those crappy "software" titles. We want games dammit, and the ability to watch DV... uh... UMDs!

(lol)

Even more enjoyable than a heavy layer of sarcasm is seeing the replies of those who don't notice it. ;)

When will you stop showing these pointless numbers from Japan. Last time I checked this site was in aimed at Americans. Some American numbers would be nice, these numbers are a waste of space.

Ouch James.

Japanese sales directly (but not immediatly) affect the DS in North America. And it's not your space to waste, so enjoy the free DS website ;)

James,

Reliable Japanese sales data is released on a weekly basis, whereas the information from other regions doesn't show up nearly as often. If and when those numbers show up, you can be sure that we'll post it (as we have in the past).

Not to mention the fact that Japan is an extremely important region for videogames... why else would Microsoft keep trying to penetrate the Japanese market even though they keep failing :D

@ James: This is a site aimed at Americans? Then what am I, an Australian, doing in here? GASP!! Help me! I'm lost!!

(:D Yes, the sarcasm is strong in here)

*sarcasm*Wow, how could Nintendo do this to their fans? I mean the DS is just being owned by the PSP, its quite disturbing. With that new DS Lite coming out their going to just get owned by the PSP. No redesign can save them from total and utter failure*sarcasm*. How could you own the competition Nintendo? What a mean company...

The DS Lite is merely a desperate last ditch effort for Nintendo to cut down on costs of manufacturing the DS.

You see, they simply can't cut and run on the DS, so they're reducing the cost of the device by using even cheaper parts and a reduced component design that only costs them $140 per unit to make as opposed to the $209 per unit it costs now.

It's all being done to avoid litigation from the various publishers that have signed (foolishly) into long term contracts. At this stage in the game, all Nintendo can do is try and turn around this VirtualBoy-esque Titanic of a handheld before they finally hit the big PSP iceberg and Iwata goes sinking into the depths like DiCaprio's character.

118, 284 Nintendo (all systems)
57, 341 Sony and Microsoft Combined

(206% more goodness)
and the software sales?
How many games do you guys have for your ds's so far?
I've got 16, and that's not counting the ones I'm sharing with my girlfriend. or advance games...

It's starting to become a problem. Too many high quality games. I have to beat some before march! argh. Stop treating your customers so poorly nintendo, you can't just take all our money in return for amazing game after amazing game! Once all your customers are broke and homeless, who will buy your games then! WHO?!

This website is aimed at Americans? Damn. Guess us Australian readers will miss out then.

At least the Japanese numbers remind everyone of an easy comeback to all those who seem to think Nintendo is somehow teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. Well written article, anyhow.

#5 because it's a Japanese system and some of us actually like the Japanese taste in games better than the boring ass crap that most of us Americans consider fun. If you don't like it go buy a fucking Ford, sell your Sony TV and hybernate under an American rock some where until you die.

In other words just because we are American doesn't mean we ONLY like American things and only want to hear about what is going on in America. Open up your fucking mind.

Oh yeah, good point guys. America doesn't own the freaking internet James people from other countries read this site too :P

Now I just hope this is posted on Joystiq.com because a lot of the asshats on that site though that the fact that the DS was sold out had NOTHING to do with the PSP selling more units 2 and 3 weeks ago. What a joke. 2 weeks in a row the DS is back on top and facing even more shortages I hear (revo-europe.com). Those PSP fanboys actually thought the PSP was going to start out selling the DS in japan HAHAHA..
