The haste with which the above pic has surfaced to Wikipedia is astounding, making the dictionary "for the masses by the masses" an even better place for relevant and timely content. Not only is the DS Lite smaller than its predecessor, it's quite a bit brighter too. As our in-house editor asks, how will the battery life compare?

Cant tell from that pic, but i did want to point out that the bottom half of the DSL isnt any thinner than the original. Only the top lid half has been reduced in thickness, dont know if anyone else has noticed that yet...

From what I've heard, the brightest setting gives you 8-9 hours of life, and the next setting down gives around 14-15 hours.
Not exact hours.

As your in house spell checker seems to be out of order, allow me to point out that most people would spell "haste" with the 'e' on the end.

To The Spelling Nazi,
This blog is run by people who make their living playing brain-sucking video games - what did you expect?

Last I checked, this is a news site. It doesn't matter if they play games or not, a news site is about journalism, and proper journalism requires adequate grammar and spelling.
Those that complain about spelling nazi's are those who are too lazy to learn how to spell.

I love the new DSLite and I'd be very interested in replacing my year-old DSOne later this year with one -- HOWEVER -- my primary and only concern with the reduction in size is the placement of the D-pad & A/B/X/Y buttons *CLOSER* to the shoulder buttons. My average-size hands begin to cramp after only 15-20 minutes of MarioKart-type gameplay, where all of the buttons are used. Anyone hold/use a DSLite yet, and can you comment on the button ergonomics??

As far as I know, the "in-house spell checker" wouldn't catch "hast" anyway, seeing as it's a word itself.
But yeah, proofread!

I would think having the buttons and control pad higher than they were on the original DS and closer to the shoulder buttons would greatly lessen the chance of holding the DS in a game like Mario Kart DS to be uncomfortable. With the current DS, you have bend your hands up to keep them parallel with the system, but with the DS Lite, I think you'd be able to play and keep your hands in a straight line with your arms.
Get it?

The battery life is fantastic! (The following quoted from game-addicts.com):
The battery life of the DS Lite has also received a makeover. There are four different levels of luminosity in all. On its lowest setting, the DS Lite can run for 15 to 19 hours before requiring a recharge. On higher level settings, the battery life is reduced; 10 to 15 hours on it’s second dimmest, 7 to 11 hours on its third level, and 5 to 8 hours on the maximum level of luminosity. And when the battery does need to be recharged, DS Lite owners will be pleased to find that a full recharge takes just three hours, a full hour less than the DS.

Well, history provides us with a clue : the Gameboy Micro, long feared to be impossible to hold, especially with larger hands, in fact proved to be immensely more comfortable than the SP, if not the original GBA.

I think the aesthetics of the DS lite are really good, but I have a couple of big problems:
1. I already think that my DS is a bit small, and I don't have huge hands so smaller is not necessarily better.
2. The GBA cart sticks out. I can't believe this. I use the GBA slot all the time since I only recently played GBA games. It really surprises me that a company known for solid designs would do something like this.

It doesn't look all that much smaller, although i'm sure it feels smaller in hand. The screen brightness alone looks good enough to justify an upgrade.

jonesey, well people demanded a smaller DS and this is a trade off that Nintendo had to implement. You can't have it both ways. The GBA cartridge right now is the largest of all flash memory based format. Personally I would prefer that Nintendo removed the GBA slot altogether.
Plus if you are comfortable with the original DS then you don't have to get the DS Lite.

Nintendo also did the same thing with the GBA and GBA SP. When GB or GBC cartridges were put into the systems, they also stuck out. It's really no big deal. Anyway, does anyone know which brightness level on the DS Lite corresponds to the brightness level on the original DS?
Thanks.

People who bitch about spelling can't even spell them selves half the time.
Since when is knowing how to use a spell checker the same thing as knowing how to spell?
I think spelling nazi's just want something to bitch and complain about and I can't even begin to express to you how annoying bitchers and complainers are.
Besides have you ever heard of a typo? I guess not.
So you're good at spelling. Give your self a pat on the back. We all bow to your greatness. Now if only you were good at other things too.
Bring out the grammar nazi's.
On a side note (on topic) DAMN that screen looks nice and bright. I want one now. I guess I could give my bro my old one.

Does any one know if the space between the 2 screens got bigger, smaller, or stayed the same?

Wow that's pretty bright. The only thing that I find annoying on the current DS is that there is no brightness setting. I want my screens to be a bit dimmer since I mostly play my DS at night. I don't even know why someone would need to have brighter screens since you can see everything clearly even on a sunny day.
