Japanese hardware sales: Once more, with feeling

In a bizarre chain of events involving a screwdriver, a polar bear and a Polish nun named Francine, we've somehow ended up with the Japanese sales chart for the week ranging 20 February to 26 February. We're not quite sure how this happened, but we suppose we'd better tell you about it. The ranking, according to number of units sold, is a follows:

  • DS: 47,462
  • PSP: 31,742
  • PS2: 24,104
  • GBA SP: 4,964
  • GB Micro: 3,175
  • Gamecube: 1,836
  • Xbox 360: 1,203
  • GBA: 113
  • Xbox: 61
Well, this is looking awfully familiar, but we'll go through it once more. The illustrious reign of the DS has been somewhat hampered as of late, mostly due to a string of shortages which is still being dealt with by Nintendo. Still, it managed to triumphantly stay on top, ready to usher in its younger, sleeker and altogether Liter sibling into the sales charts. We're looking forward to seeing how some family teamwork will affect the rest of the contenders in the chart. Ah, who are we kidding? We know exactly what's going to happen.

1. What s this. The Xbox and 360 are sucking (partially because of the RAM shortage). HA! DS owns all ya'll. Just so you guys know, I don't have a southern accent.

2. Sheesh. Honestly.. Who cares? I'm so sick of you DS Fanboys running around flaunting your sales in a starved Japanese market. Why don't you go get your own site and people that actually care can go read this junk?

=) (sarcasm! we rock... March 21st will be wonderful)

5. Nintendo for World Domination!

It's pretty amazing DS can dominate the sales charts in that manner. I don't think the DS and its games are THAT much better than the other gaming devices in the market right now.

That being said, the DS is my only portable gaming device, so maybe it is :)

6. Hmm... GameCube outsells 360... Though, that's probably due to the small amout of 360s available, and it's not very popular in Japan (because they are prejudiced against an American-made system!).

I'm surprised people are still buying original GBAs, what with with the GBA SP2 being widely available... But even THAT outsells the original Xbox!
(in Japan)

Hmm... DS sales are okay... but could be better. In fact, if it was Ours, it'd be much better!

7. BPMΩ, where do you get the idea that Xbox does badly in Japan because "they are prejudiced against an American-made system"? Your own prejudice if you were in their shoes?

This whole anti-americanism of japan is a popular Myth these days. MS needs to learn the cultural difference because their way of marketting Xbox is completely off the mark there. On top of that, many people are blind of this fact and blame the japanese for it. No wonder Xbox hasn't overcome the problem, eh? Most people haven't even IDENTIFIED what the problem is, by the looks of it.

8. Jgrey, it was a joke.
Curse this Internet, with its difficulty to determine humor!

9. "What s this. The Xbox and 360 are sucking (partially because of the RAM shortage). HA! DS owns all ya'll. Just so you guys know, I don't have a southern accent".

It's not because of Ram shortages or Small amounts of Xbox 360 in Japan .There are tons of Xbox360's and Xbox units in Japan and only 45% of the Original shipment 0f 360's has sold. It's not because the are prejudice against US systems either as one bigot claims. It's because the Xbox360 is a mediocre system with crap games .
