Oh disconnectors, how we loathe thee and thy cowardly response to defeat. According to an interesting "We track a stat that the game calls Connection Percentage, but that I've been calling the Chump Meter. It keeps track of anyone who boots off. So, if I'm beating some kid and he tries to disconnect to avoid the loss, he'll be punished for that. When he turns the game back on, the game will know what happened and it will then hand out some Chump Points."
The game will also be able to distinguish between intentional disconnections and the forgivable ones caused by your router unexpectedly exploding. This is certainly excellent news that will soothe many a temper, especially considering that Metroid Prime: Hunters is likely to be one of the most aggressively competitive games on Nintendo's Wi-Fi service thus far.
[Thanks Nmaster!]

Its nice to see that N's addressing this. The people who disconnect from mario cart really suck. My usual experience is that if I can even get 4 people to play with, whoever comes in #4 almost always drops out after the first friggen race (unless its me, which it frequently is). Sometimes even #3 drops out. There's no excuse for that. I've seen people come back from #4 to come in 1st or 2nd overall many times (when I'm not playing with a bunch of pathetic losers that drop out if they come in #4, that is). Its not even that hard to make such a comeback.

I know what you mean.
I've never dropped out right after the very first race but they really could've made that function (of pairing up drivers of the same skill) a hell of allot better. I sometimes found myself way out of my league. Driving on an empty road isn't fun for anyone.
Here's what I wrote for this on joystiq:
Are you not supposed to do that? Ooops.
I first got into playing on-line with Unreal Tournament and I would occasionally wander into an arena where I'm expecting players at the same skill level as myself but found chronic jumpers with dead on accuracy; some of whom I never even saw. I always imagined a 5 year old girl giggling at my relative klutziness.
Was I supposed to just hang around and get fragged? Because what I usually did was log out of the arena to find one I could contend in. Or at least a place where I could see the opponents every once in a while.
I'm really curious because in Mario Kart DS they're supposed to automatically set you up against players who are just as skilled as you, but I've logged on and often found myself way out of my league from time to time and just racing on an empty road with all opponents snaking away ahead of me.
If they're really going to blackbook you for signing off in the middle of a game where you're of no use, Ireally hope they worked the bugs out of the system because it sure isn't working for Mario Kart.

Gonzo, that's pretty true.
My first match on Mario Kart was against somebody with something along the lines of two hundred wins and one hundred losses.
Needless to say, I never saw him during any of the races..

#3,#4 - there is a "rivals" mode that tries to match you with people of the same skill level. When you are good enough to win races, your attitude will change about people who disconnect. My record is around 150-50 and I cannot remember the last time i completed a race with all four players

K so they say they can detect people from disconnecting from a game and a router going out. As much as I hate people disconnting whats going to stop them from pulling the plug on the router? I think they will know when people intentionally disconnect like Animal Crossing: WW does with Resetti that way next time you connect to Nintendo WFC your game card tattles on you telling Nintendo you shut off your System and that is why you disconnected. But shutting off a router still gives them a chance to get away with it.

The way I see it working, is at the start of a game you are given these chump points, then when you drop out from lack of connectivity or finish the game the chump points are taken away. By turning off they are never told to go away and so you're stuck with them. This could potentially be put in Mario Kart, but only if the points are handled by the server and not the cart and those who get disconnected by exploding router would get stuck with it too.
As for forcing server disconnection, I wouldn't switch my router off, I'd just run away from it. So if you see people running away from a Maccas and then running back in future, you know what those guys are upto.

What I want to know is what happens if you close the lid during a match.
Personally, I would have preferred a better way of opting out in case I need to go or something. Say I'm playing the game at a bus stop with a wireless signal nearby and the bus comes. What do I do then? Do I just leave the DS on and wait for the bus to drive out or range? A better system would be to give you a few 'disconnect credits' every week so you can disconnect a certain number of times without accruing a penalty.
Also, I don't much care for the tracking of stats online. As we all know, those who care more about a number than having fun will find ways to artificially boost their kill count/headshots, like using 2 DS's with 2 copies of the game. Scores should be tracked from game to game but definitely not as a global thing. This is the reason why I'm looking forward to Tetris DS more than MP:H. All the CS kiddies and l33t wanna-be's will be playing MP:H.

Well here's how I see it. It's only a statistic and I really don't see why something like that needs to be kept track of anyway. Bragging rights?
I know that I don't personally care what my record is. (I can't even rattle it off for you.)
Though I've never just ditched out of a race before.
