Ray Almeda, of AMN, sat down with the Spore creator yesterday evening and asked if gamers would be able to play the upcoming title on the DS (and Sony's handheld...thing), with which he responded "Yes...definitely."
Will's past attempts in gaming have been nothing but gold, with his Simcity and The Sims franchises being easily accessible to people in all walks of life (heck, some of my assignments back in middle school were to build fully-functioning cities in Simcity) and pushed the envelope of conventional game design. It's no wonder that so many eyes are on him and his upcoming project. We just hope Spore on the DS will be WiFi compatible in some way.
Spore is currently slated for a 2007 release.
[Update: Definitely fixed a typo.]

Source of "Slated for 2007" and whether or not you're referring to the DS version or the PC version?
Spore for the PC is slated for Q3 2006 according to the most recent non-GDC reports.

Will Wright just got Nintendo a sale. When the DS Lite comes out in the states you have a new customer!

Will Wright's style of games are perfectly suited for the DS. They require some sort of stylus/mouse input. And they're "pick em up" games. Games you can just pick up and play for a little bit without feeling like you have to devote tons of time to them in one sitting, which makes them perfect for portables.
As if the DS lite wasn't going to kickass in the states anyway, this will certainly help.

My wife and Iare really excited about this one.
We thought they were talking about putting this on mobile phones not really on the DS.
My wife is a big fan of the Sims but hasn't been none too impressed with their showing on the DS so far. Hopefully this will make up for it.
Make up for it Will.

Yes, they're easily accessible, but so is human waste. Doesn't mean I want to play with it.

As a side note first... I love my DS, but think it's a bit prickish to go about insulting the PSP... However, I do think that the DS is much better suited for a game like Spore simply because of the stylus, (Wow, an actual use for it. >_> I've yet to actually like any game that needed it, so it's just been gathering dust.) and I must say thank god that even if Spore isn't compatable with my PC I'll have a back up. @_@ Albeit a backup where large and detailed screenshots cannot occur.
