Japanese hardware sales: Lite still on top

A mysterious envelope arrived at my door this morning. It was mysterious in the sense that, unlike all my other mail, a mechanical ticking sound couldn't be heard coming from its manilla innards. I carefully opened it, expecting a mysterious white powder to scatter onto my hands, but instead, I was rewarded with a neatly printed copy of the Japanese hardware sales charts for the week ranging from 3 April to 9 April. The ranking, according to number of units sold, is a follows:
  • DS Lite: 154,731
  • Phat DS: 49,825
  • PSP: 30,565
  • PS2: 28,896
  • GBA SP: 5,211
  • Game Boy Micro: 3,103
  • Xbox 360: 1,940
  • Gamecube: 1,224
  • GBA: 110
  • Xbox: 46
The Lite continues to be unstoppable, stomping on all those other devices that might stand in its way. At this point, the only chance the other platforms have at toppling Nintendo's beautiful behemoth is if they combine into a giant, all-purpose machine, complete with two touch screens, cutting-edge 3D graphics, nine analogue sticks, a microphone and interchangeable faceplates. It would also have to play Nintendogs.

2. You know letter bombs can be set off by opening the envelope. you could have been blown up anyway.

3. Yes! We need the "giant, all-purpose machine"! I need one today! Now! This instant!

5. they need to release the lite here in the states already

6. Yeah, they do.

7. Why is "phat" used for the original DS? I think the more appropriate word would actually be "fat." Or has the slang spelling lost so much value that is now used in the same way as it's correctly-spelled counterpart?

8. Another gripe from me.

Why don't you guys get the monthly NPD numbers for North America? According to Gamespot, the DS sold 150,000 in February. (March numbers are coming soon.)

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6145806.html

I know it's fun to see the DS trounce all competition in Japan, but North America and Europe are still important. (Although, other territories are becoming less important when Japan moves more DSes in one week than North America does in one month.)

It's not like there's anything to hide. The PSP did a little better last month, but only by 20,000. On software, Animal Crossing beat out any PSP game, and I'm sure Tetris and Metroid will do well in March.

So why do we only get Japan numbers?

Posted at 5:32PM on Apr 17th 2006 by Probot

9. At this rate, the Lite'll sell a million units before it even gets released in the US. This thing's momentum is friggin' amazing.

#7- Presumably because the slang spelling is also used for the Lite. Lite and Phat as opposed to Light and Fat. We're so witty.

#8- Because the Japanese numbers are much more trustworthy. The NPD numbers fail to count major big-box stores such as Walmart and Target, which makes them little better than useless. Also, the Japanese numbers illustrate the continuing cultural zeitgeist that is the DS Lite, which gives some people a warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

10. Look here: http://www.revo-europe.com/news.php?nid=9007 the lite has almost 700,000 for the year. Not bad. The DS fat has over 730,000.

If the Lite keeps selling over 100,000 a week it probably will break a million before it gets shipped here.

Once again the DS owns 6 of the top 10 games with another game (english training) creeping up on a million sold.

Does anybody know how many PSP games have hit the million sold mark? if any?

Posted at 8:33PM on Apr 17th 2006 by Matters

11. heh oops I posted that link to revo-europe before I saw who you were.. my bad.. I do kinda wish you posted the complete numbers like they do though. They show the numbers for this week, last week and the year as well as the top 10 games sold for this week. ds.advancedmn.com does it that way also so I usually look for numbers on those two sites (since I can't read japanese).

12. Okay, I'll try and make it more robust next week.

13. Appreciate it. I do like to hear my self complain a little too much some times ;) I just thought it might be helpful to some of the others here. Thanks.

14. Lite isn't slang as much as it's a corporation-created marketing term, but I guess I can understand that rationale.

As for NPD, they are by far the most reliable for North American sales. And they DO include Wal Mart. They have for a few years already.

Regardless of how reliable Japan's figures are, the most prominent company for US stats is NPD Funworld, so that's what I expect to see. Japan sales numbers are nice, but they don't tell the whole story. There's no reason to ignore North American sales figures.

It's important because the user base of the console determines how many games are released in this region. I'm sure we'll always get major releases, but I want to know the likelihood of smaller games getting ported here.

I'm glad it's doing well in Japan, but that doesn't tell me how well it's doing in my own country.

15. And while you're at it we need numbers for europe, china, korea and russia. chop chop!

16. "Does anybody know how many PSP games have hit the million sold mark? if any?"

Two. GTA:LCS (1.85 milion) and Ridge Racer (1.04 milion).

Posted at 3:50PM on Apr 19th 2006 by BPMΩ

17. Oops... accidently submitted the last post incompleted...

Whereas the DS has 10 games that have surpasses the 1 milion sales mark. The lowest being Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop (1.04 milion), and the highest being Nintendogs (All versions combined = 6 milion!!).

Yes, it would be nice to have North American sales shown as well (Europe, too), as they paint a different picture (for example, Game Boy micro is doing quite well in Japan, but has been a failure elsewhere, it would seem).
