Secret "Simple Start" Wi-Fi connection? [Update 1]
File this one under "What the hell?" Some astute gamer has discovered a hidden feature inside the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection setup menu, and one that certainly leans itself toward DS-to-Wii connection theory. The video gives an extremely detailed explanation, so check it out....now. Go ahead.
Done? All right. The system asks for the player to press a "Simple Start Wi-Fi Button", something that clearly doesn't exist on any existing Nintendo hardware. So, is this how the Wii and the DS will sync up? Before you run off wildly screaming the news throughout your house, we offer these two bits of counter-evidence. First, regading the Wii, we've seen essentially every button and switch on the damn thing, even inside the "mysterious" front flap; no "Simple Start" or even remotely related button has been seen or reported. Second, accessing this mode by hitting the absolute upper-left pixel on the touch screen is ridiculous; in certain cases the stylus can't even reach the pixel, and a toothpick or other thin, prodding device must be used.
We've seen no reason why "DS Download Play" would fail to properly pick up and sync with a Nintendo Wii console, so we'll chalk this up as a feature that will fade, like the legendary city of Atlantis, into one of the unexplained mysteries of the past.
[Update 1: The internet, it seems, will brook no mysteries. Save Atlantis. Click here for an extremely detailed explanation of this feature, and as speculated, it has nothing to do with Wii connectivity.]
[Thanks, Super-Jesse-Mario!]

This really works. I just tried it using the edge of a flat-head screwdriver on Starfox Command. Very strange. LET THE SPECULATION BEGIN!

Yeah, you don't need a special tool to do the trick either, by the way. Now, Nintendo Forum Insiders want people to keep all quiet like on the news, so if it was simply a feature that was never meant for use I'm sure they'd tell us that. What I'm trying to see now is that little glif that appears when you find the button (By the way, I can't get it to work on the DSPhat, but I guess others are, so it being Wii related is HIGHLY unlikely since the Wii's online specifications weren't set in stone back when the first Wi-Fi game appeared). The only thing adding fuel to the fire is that Nintendo is being hush-hush about it. If it was a non-functional tool, why not just openly admit it?

Yes there is a button like that. Its above the Memory Card slot, but it says SYNC. Either it syncs the Wiimote to the Wii, or the DS to the Wii. If its the DS-to-Wii, then that means the 6 KB of internal memory is probably for storing information needed to connect the controller/system together.
Nice job, Nintendo.
Nice job.

Wow, really, what the heck? I also noticed when you do touch that top-left pixel, some weird yellow icon appears for a brief second where you touched the screen.
My ultimate guess is that Nintendo might have been planning their own wireless router that includes a "simple start WiFi" button. This guess supports Nintendo's "quick and easy" philosophy. Of course, then they made that WiFi USB Connector dongle with Buffalo, so they probably cancelled production of it.
Meh, it's a good guess in my opinion.

Did you read my comment? That's the glif I'm trying to figure out now. Not meaning to spam, just wish people would my comments, even if they are uninteresting and full of sexual innuendos.

Very interesting, but at the same time, not.
This could just be some feature that Nintendo was going to implement in the DS with its Wi-Fi Connection but at the last minute decided to scrap it, but instead of deleting the code for it, they left it in and still left some obscure way to access it for whatever they may or may not need it for.
Alternatively, as Demi Adejuyigbe said, it could be used with the Wii's SYNC button, but from what I've heard, that button is used to synchronize the Wii Remotes with the Sensor Bar.
Finally, it could be that some future Wi-Fi Connection DS games could use and trigger this feature from within their own code, so that's why the feature still exists in the settings and why it's so hard to access, but still accessible (so games can use it, and Nintendo can access it directly if they need to).

Actually, IGN already confirmed with developers who just recently received documentation for the Wiimote's speaker and internal memory that the 6KB (or was it 4KB?) is meant to store a personolized profile for Wii games, but they will be overwritten everytime you play a different game.

Of course I read your comment AFTER I created my post. Just because my post comes after yours does NOT mean that I am able to read EVERY SINGLE POST that comes before me. In fact, I only remember being able to see up to #3 when I was writing that post. In fact, people can be posting at this instant and I won't be able to see it at this moment until I click the "Add Your Comments" button.
And I highly agree with you, that icon does not appear on any current Nintendo products, and it seems that the Wii doesn't even have that icon.

I had no trouble getting this to work with my stylus on the DS Lite. And I'm using a screen protector, which usually makes touching the corner even more difficult.

I can't get it to work with Tetris and original DS. I'll try Mario Kart if I can find it.
Also, could someone post a higher quality picture just to make sure I'm hitting the right spot. (Although top left corner shouldn't need much explaining.)

metayoshi: Well, thank you for the acknow, did you pick up the sexual innuendo? No one ever does!!!
*jokes aside*
I made an "artist" conception of the icon to my best memory after pressing the upper left corner again and again and again...and again. Anyway, it's after the jump. Anyone have a clue?

I got it to work with MKDS on a regular DS. You really do need to get way up in that corner. I took some pictures of the yellow thing, and made an "artist's rendition" of it too. :-) For your viewing pleasure:

Hmm... Anyone try this with the Secure EZ Setup button on a Linksys wireless router? On the WRT54G it's the "Cisco" button. Make sure it has official Linksys firmware, DD-WRT won't work. And make sure it's updated to the latest version, some versions have a bug that reverts the settings when you press the button.
Anyway, if this happens to automatically configure the DS then I'd like to hear about it.

Well, I can't seem to get it to work. Maybe it's dependent on your firmware version? To check what version you have, go into Pictochat and eject a DS game. The screen will change color:
Version 1: The DS will freeze
Version 2: Grayish Blue
Version 3: Dark Green
Version 4: Yellow
Version 5: Magenta
Version 6: Blue
Version 7?: Purple
iQue: Dark Green
DS Lite: Purple
FlashMe: Dark Green
I have version 6...
Meh, I'm probably doing it wrong.
