DS Daily: New horizons

There have been a lot of familiar franchises on the DS, and we love them! But, and this is where a lot of the system's publicity comes from, there has also been an explosion of new genres and new experiences, as well as revivals of past trends. So, as hardcore gamers (the kind who read game blogs), has your gaming universe been expanded by the DS? Have you taken part in any completely new experiences? Played your first graphical text adventure? Minigame collection? Whatever Brain Age was?

Or maybe what you discovered on the DS is something popular that you just missed out on for some reason, like Final Fantasy or Castlevania. We want to hear about your experiences! We want to know how the DS has affected your gaming tastes! We want to know how you classify Brain Age!

1. When I look at online retailers, Brain Age is usually in the Puzzle section. That works, if only because its precise genre is a mystery.

I'm a PC gamer at heart, so I'm only interested in consoles that can do things my PC can't. Like touch screens (not to mention motion control, a la Wii). So I'd say the whole DS library has something new for me.

But if you want specifics, I never thought I'd spend my winter days collecting Snowman furniture in Animal Crossing: Wild World.

2. Elite Beat Agents is unlike anything I'd ever played before or wanted to play before, a great game. And Mario 64 DS was a revelation to me. You can shoot me down now but.... I hadn't enjoyed the N64 version as much as the Snes Mario games. The changes for the DS version ironed out my problems with the original game, I loved the stylus control and the mini games are the best thing since the Donkey Kong game and watch.
My wife and I both love Brain Age which I think is like a Tamagotchi - only with you as the pet. Think about it.... you keep coming back everyday to see how that little sucker (in this case: youself) is getting on.
I also enjoyed Trauma Centre, but it could have been done on a PC using a mouse.
But as much as fun as my DS is, I have used it to play GBA RPG's and Mario Golf more and there aren't many up coming titles that I'm excited about. Games like Metroid Prime and Kirby's Paint Brush promised more then I feel the DS is actually delivering whilst games like Advanced Wars DS and Wario Ware touched haven't improved over the GBA versions. All in all, I could have had as much fun with my SP but the lure of a new system was to great!

3. as much as I love all the continuing series on the DS, the one series I was sold on was the Jump Stars series. They found a way to bring in characters from familiar properties and put them im a solid, fun fighting game. Each game tops itself by going beyond whats expected and breathing new life into the game itself, new phisics, new combinations, new everything, unless they do a 3, people will still play 2 for it's monsterious amount of flexability and fun.

4. Brain Age = edutainment?

5. Nintendo DS brought me back to Nintendo and really back to gaming in general. I had a PS2, but played very few games (MGS, Kingdom Hearts, Prince of Persia and not much else). Now, I follow gaming news daily awaiting game announcements and trying different franchises.

DS helped me to try and love Metroid (played through Metroid Fusion and eagerly awaiting MP3), Animal Crossing, Mario & Luigi, Castlevania, and Dragon Quest.

6. The DS has basically ripped open the doors to all the genres except shooting. During the drought, when maybe a game or two came out a month, I'd feel the lack. Big time. So I'd end up buying an game that came out. Before the DS...

I'd never wanted to play a first person dungeon crawler... Never wanted to try a point and click adventure... Never tried any sorta 'surgery' game... Never been interested in any sidescroller except Mario... Didn't care about 'minigame' games... Racing? Hahaha! That's a good one... Didn't know what a mystery dungeon game was...

Before the DS, I played RPGs. And that... that was about it.

7. As a professional video game reviewer, I find that the games I look forward to more and more come out on the DS. Games like Castlevania, Elite Beat Agents and Children of Mana (man I loved Secret of Mana...that game needs to be re-released for the DS with wireless...off my tangent now) have made me stay up until 4 and 5 AM to keep playing; Gears of War and Lost Planet both failed to keep me up much past 1 AM.

And I find Brain Age to be an educational mini-game sort of game.

8. The DS has pretty much brought me back to being a gamer. Now I can't get enough of it it's kinda like CRACK that way. I would really like to see more old games get remade. Mario 64 DS was kind of a tease on what could be done if companies could cooperate and work through the copyright stuff.

9. I echo #2, Elite Beat Agents got me tapping along, rhythm action style, in a way I never had before. The tactile experience of a touch interface, the stories and the great art direction are just too much to resist! Here we go!

That said, I'd still like to see genres pushed some more on the DS. A lot of my breakthrough portable gaming moments still hark back to the GBA. The sheer inventiveness of "Wario Ware, Inc: Mega Microgame$" amazed me in a way that the touching and blowing of "Touched" never really did.

I really think there is still some progress to be made in existing genres for our little dual screened friend. I'm sure there are even some all together new game experiences yet to be set free!

10. Forget Brain Age, how do you classify Elektroplankton. I was lured to the DS by this title and it remains one of my favourites. I've stayed with the DS for Mario and Mario Kart, plus a couple of RPG titles (like Lost Magic).

Very much looking forward to Impossible Mission as and when that appears (one of my very favourite games on the old '64)
