Yes, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl will feature Wi-Fi trading and battling, hurray-hurrah. Little did we know, however, that some independent developers (i.e. programmers with way too much free time) were developing an MMORPG version of the franchise based on the original Red and Blue versions. Sister site Joystiq clued us in, and we were rather intrigued.
Upon installation, we noted the extreme "alpha" status of the project. The only system currently implemented is that of battle, and even that seemed shoddy at best. You simply choose your six Pokemon from the standard list of 151 and walk around a grassy field until challenged. The game has a long way to go, and the chances that it can make it all the way past Nintendo's elite legal team seem slim. Try it out if you're
And please, Nintendo, take a hint. We really want an official Pokemon MMO.

I'd just like to step in and remind everyone here that this is an unauthorized project, run by a person who has been excluded from the mainstream Pokémon fandom, due to their unethical practises, including going so far as to impersonate a lawyer from Perkins Coie LLP (Nintendo of America's representatives) in an attempt to make their project seem legitimate. Further information can be found in the comments on the Joystiq article. I've also posted up the email correspondence from Haris (POL's organiser) to myself, along with my emails to Parkins Coie LLP and their response, on the following thread on Bulbagarden forums.

Just to repeat...Haris and POL are a blight on the name of the online Pokémon fandom, and have been banned from all respectable Pokémon forums. I would strongly urge people to avoid associating with them, if at all possible.

Fans strive to show off their fanaticism towards a game, and it tends to get a bit on the ugly side. If Nintendo has elite lawyers, and I believe all corporations do, I should not have heard about POL. I recently heard about it though. Perhaps it's because Nintendo does not really care about POL, or more fortunately Nintendo has authorized POL. I also visited other online pokemon games which use the same sprites and found them very shabby. I think the root cause of mudslinging from other fans is the ability of the POL admins, who are also fans, to bring an online game that is competent enough for a real gamer's taste. It seems that POL is a threat to many fan communities and other online pokemon games that Haris' exclusion is not very surprising. Patronage will shift more to the POL site and the online game, leaving the petty group of fans with a lesser or without a community. How about instead of excluding Haris and POL, all fans join together and do a petition for an online pokemon game? Things might go better without the POL forums. This situation is strikingly similar to one in a Greek story - a powerful authority does unkind deeds towards a mere human looker because of vanity and competition of patronage.
