Reader wiiminator is having router issues when it comes to his DS WiFi. Since switching to an Apple Airport Extreme router, he's unable to take his DS online. He says the issue seems to have something to do with security options, which could definitely be it, since the DS doesn't like WPA. But instead of throwing out a bunch of theories, since we don't know how wiiminator's security is configured, we thought we'd see about a group powwow today. If you've had issues with any aspect of your WiFi connection, throw 'em out there ... and those of you in the know, here's your chance to show off. It's not always the best network, but it's what we've got, and we should do what we can to make sure everyone can play.

3Com CRADSL72 disconnects always after a few minutes of playing (around third race in Mario Kart) so I never was able to compete and eventually gave up the Wifi thing. No plan to change my router.

I use an Apple Airport and I can get an albeit weak signal from two floors above the Airport unit. When next to it, I get a very strong signal and have no trouble connecting to the WiFi and playing lag free cross-atlantic matches.

I've used two different 2Wire DSL routers since I've owned by DS. Both have failed to work unless I switch it to a Shared connection, then it works fine. The problem is that, on several occasions, I have to reestablish ANY form of wireless connection by going into the router settings and setting everything to defaults and then switching it back to Shared. This is also the case for my Wii.
It's only really a problem since the laptop I'm currently using is a work laptop and, for some reason, won't let me access the router settings, so I have to use my desktop which is in another room.

It should be noted that this only affects the new 802.11n version of the Airport router. The new router has a combined WEP/WPA transitional setting that seems to be the cause of the issue. Even though it generates a WEP key, the DS still won't connect.
Besides from disabling any type of encryption on the new router, the only solution I've found that works is to connect your old Airport extreme to one of the ethernet ports of the new Extreme. Then setup a separate 802.11b network for your DS to connect to. From what I've read, this problem affects the XBOX 360 as well. Not sure about the PS3 or Wii.
I'm hoping this is will be resolved with a firmware update from Apple.

When my DS Lite didn't connect through my router right away I went on Nintendo's DS area where I looked up and followed the instructions for my router.
Since then it's smooth sailing.

My Linksys WRK54G model 1 works to a certain extent with my DS. It likes to work (and pretty well at that) for about 5 minutes, then immediatly BLOCKS the DS after, forcing me to either reset the router or just give up. It's annoying as hell, and since I got the router my Nintendo WiFi stick doesn't work while the router's running. Sad to say but the router's now also dead, awaiting a replacement power supply to arrive from Linksys as we speak. Ugh.

I have the lynksys stated above, and it works fine with my DS(though it is a crap router), I also use a d-link and that connects just as well. The problem is, with WEP enabled I can not get any homebrew to go online, great programs like dsaim, or beup won't work with a secured network....iono why :-(

I assume this is in referene to the new Airport Extreme from Apple, with the n capabilities?
Apparently there are reports that the 360 also does not seem to connect well with the new extreme. Each seem to claim it is the other's problem. With this DS issue popping up it seems that it is more likely the Extreme's issue. It could be something to do with the draft n technology inside.

What's funny is that everyone I know with a router has had one problem or another, and yet I, relegated to rural dial-up as I am, have no problem connecting with the USB adapter. It even says on the box, "broadband required." Soo not true. Good luck, folks.

I use a Mac mini for WEP playing on my DS and PSP. I have my Mac mini connected to my router by ethernet. I then turn my mini's airport on and use it as an access point. This way I can leave my router on WPA all the time. I only turn airport on when I need it for DS or PSP play. Newer PSP games support WPA. So, it isn't needed for it as much.

I've had the same issues with the Xtreme. I have an Express as well for streaming iTunes to my stereo system but it's set up in "bridge" mode so the AE is pretty much just acting as a relay station and not a unique access point.
With no security and only MAC filtering I can connect just fine but add any security WAP/WEP and I can see it but not connect. Even if I use the hex equivalent the DS doesn't like it one bit.

My ds would connect then unexpectedly disconnect. In order to connect again I would need to reset my router. I ended up assigning a static IP address and changing a few other settings that fixed the problem. I'm surprised other people don't have this same problem because I had it with 2 separate routers.

One issue with the Airport Extreme; it doesn't implement UPnP. That means that many applications can't ask the firewall to open a port and forward it back to them for incoming connections. The Airport does implement an alternative protocol, but support is spotty.
I have no idea if the DS uses UPnP or even needs incoming connections, but it could be an issue.

Netgear Router (WGR614v7) connects fine, but I almost always get an error after a long lenghty search for opponents on mario kart. Though occasionally I can connect to 1 other person. But never a 3 or 4 player race.

I have a Belkin router. It was a real pain to get it going, butsetting static IPs on everything helped, and I had to set my DS IP to be in the DMZ(de-militarised zone), and it's been smooth sailing for over a year now. It has meant that I can keep my network secured, but let my ds connect without any hindrances.

use your airport connection with a mac using WPA, it's safer. create a shared connection on the mac and connect to that with your DS. turn on this connection only when you want to play online with DS. http://osxconvert.blogspot.com/2006/08/nintendo-ds-settings-for-sharing-wifi.html

Personally, I haven't had any router issues, but I have noticed that I practically have to sit on top of the router to play online. I can take the laptop over into the neighbor's yard with no problem, but I have to perch on the sofa with the DS. No range. Oh well... it could be worse.

I have an older apple airport and I use it with WEP. The only way I could get my DS to connect was to use a five letter WEP password for a 40 bit WEP key.
Very strange, but it works that way.
Good Luck.
