Etrian Odyssey director Kazuya Niinou has been posting fascinating, and disarmingly honest, blog entries on the game's official website. The fourth page was just posted, and contains a rather bold statement: "So I've decided! Etrian Odyssey will be the last great turn-based RPG." This was a reaction to the rumors of Dragon Quest IX going action-RPG-- rumors that turned out not to be true.
While we admire Niinou for his confidence that his game is good enough to exemplify a genre (confidence that increases our frothing demand for the game significantly), we're afraid Etrian Odyssey is going to continue to face stiff competition from Dragon Quest. And we doubt that any number of awesome blog posts will put down that particular cultural phenomenon.

I think the main point being made is that the genre is dying out. A lot of classic franchises have gone the way of action rpg. Personally I don't like action rpg's but it seems like the ADD afflicted masses, don't like the waiting in turn based rpgs, or random battles or any of the things that make classic rpg's so endearing to classic rpg fans. I don't think the genre will die off, it will just sleep a while until the fad passes.

I really like the idea of a developer being open and honest about things. It'll probably influence my purchase. I love to see more of this.

Whoops, guess they missed the memo. Also I think that IGN quote on the Ikaruga box is funny. I prefer turn-based RPGs to be more like Pokemon or FFTA than FFIII. It's one thing if one character gets a turn and then the next fastest gets theirs, but it really bothers me when I can't be sure of who's turn it will be next when everyone has to choose before hand. It's like having the curaga spell hit before life so the one character gets killed again. At least DQIX won't have random battles.

I hadn't heard of this game before. The website looks awesome. From what I can see there this is definitely my type of game. =)
The characters have different skin colors too, that's a really nice option imo.

I'm getting kind of a Yggdra Union vibe from the character art, which I love. I'm pretty darn excited for this game.

rpgs to me will always be turn based, action rpgs feel too much like platformers (like r&c or mario64 and up). the only difference i see between them is stuff like levels or abilities. of course, the only action rpgs ive really played are lunar knights and marvel: ultimate alliance. so yeah, i'm pretty much a pro at these type of things.

I love turn-based RPGs, but this game holds no interest for me. Why? The mapping part of the game. Instead of having an automap function, the game makes mapping everything yourself in great detail a "feature" of the game. It's like stepping back into the 1980s again. You have to draw in all the walls, doors, traps, everything, yourself. Sounds tedious to the extreme.

The non-linear path/storyline ro whatever you choose to call it is a big sell for those who prefer the traditional RPG's. I like being abletopick back up,from any point in the game, or at least reference it...I am in my 40's and was a little too old to participate with those who were playing D&D (early in it's popular stages) at that time (early 70's)So foryears even BEFORE concole gaming, felt as though I had been cheated out of being able to participate in that live experience, years ago.
I read all the books avail. then and the mapping,[of the] details involved was what originally caught my eye, so to speak...(besides the fantasy genre) The self made graph paper maps held a sort of intrigue, and was neigh IS a great draw for me.
The mapping is a 'SAVE'in some ways as you can come back to ANY POINT, or at least reference any point. The artwork shown of the backgrounds are beautiful great use of colors, and the use of outdoor dungeons? don't get me started, niceimprovement..if my PC screen is to be believed... I am still a fan of the old horror movies (Boris Karloff, Lon Chainey etc...) that DiD NOT show the details of the monsters vivsectioning the vic. but left it to the imagination.
I felt that point was an excitement that lended itself better to entertainment,in the true sense of the word.
I for one have a very fertile imagination and I believe that the imagined details that MY mind's eye will fill in will be far better than anything I might have been forced/suggested to view. I am a tattoo artist by trade, so these backgrounds are somewhat of a [blank]canvas for the imagination and the details (which my mind adds) that I for one can not wait to fill in.
I had a GBA for years and never used it,in spite of the sporadic and periodically intruguing game titles, but it is games like THIS ONE that inspires me to use my DS on a daily basis.
I've been spending about $90.-$120. a month on games now, with no regrets and already have my next 6 months worth of exciting titles picked out; held by MY DEPOSITS! I presently have quite a few deposits on various games and am excited to see just how far ( great game release wise)they can push these NEW GEN. systems. I feel there is a much better quality to the new games, more original content, besides the obvious graphics capabilities...
Graphics are use-less if they produce poor incongruent storylines and low replay/entertainment value.
I sold my xbox (orig)(and my old game boys)and invested in my first DS and I have not looked back since. I HAVE NOT ONE REGRET ABOUT THAT DECISION, except that I should have done that sooner.
The last gen games options were like TV; where every channel is a cop show, reality, game show or sitcom.
These new systems, beside the graphics are justmuch more creative offerings and a much more broad definition of what I call entertainment. Keep up the good work guys, you keep churnin' out great games and I'll keep supportin' you with cash... GLADLY :)
