For a change of pace, 1UP's Jeremy Parish sometimes submits reviews in webcomic form. He
We're big fans of Mr. Parish-- we listen to his 1UP podcast Retronauts every week, just like every sane person should. Not only that, we continue to be enthralled by anything that makes use of the "Pokemans" meme. So there was no choice but to post this comic when we saw it. Our hands were tied. What do you think about "alternative" review formats like this one?
Update: Changed to reflect the actual circumstances of the strip's creation, thanks to a correction from Mr. Parish himself.

Wow. Thank god it didn't get published! That has to be one of the most unprofessional looking "reviews" I've ever seen. He actually thought content like this would fly? It's this kind of trash that gives the rest of us that write online a bad name.

Thanks for the link-love, dudes, but one correction -- the actual comic wasn't submitted as a review. I discussed the possibility of an offbeat review with the reviews editor, but it was only once we had decided to go with something more informative that I actually pursued the concept and developed it into a comic for my own site.

I loved everything about that review. Except it gave just about no info on the game whatsoever. But really, who doesn't know what a pokey mans is anyway?

Yes, Kia, let's not let creativity or imagination get in the way of our precious "legitimacy".

Sorry, but as a writer online myself, at a number of places, I expect an informative, decent review of a game--Pokemon or not, especially on a high profile site.
If I want something like that I'll go read some webcomics. There's a time and a place for humor like that, and a supposedly professional review column is not it.

Word up, Byron! I am the very same JC. The family is doing great, and I will relay your inquiry to them!
And kia: Did you read the rest of the comic-reviews posted on the 1up blog? They're all as informative as any print review, while also being more impressionistic-- and funnier. This one lacks information, I think, because it's just part 1, and because (despite my misdirection) while the original concept was for a professional review, this particular comic was made for a blog.

Are you a writer Kia? I wouldn't have known! After all, the words 'precious' and 'ponce' flooded into my mind and blackened out the screen whenever I tried to read your comments.
I hope all your writing is this... wonderful.

Kia: It's the first page. Dismissing the entire review because of the first page is like watching the first minute of a movie and deciding it sucks.

I personally enjoyed his alternative-style Lost in Blue 2 review. It got the information across, and did it in a way that was far more entertinaing thna the run-of-the-mill review. As long as it's not too common, I like when reviewers mix it up a little.

Actually it's been complimented quite a few times. Just because I expect information in a review doesn't mean I think humor is completely out of place. Totally the opposite.

Yeah, I read the others. I don't mind the style, but I still fail to see how they're informative in the least. Not as much as a normal review, anyway. Barely anything at all is even said about the games. @_@

Whether it's a legit review or not, I appreciate it and identify with it as commentary. There are a bevy of gamers who have grown up with Nintendo, continue to want to play games and have money to spend. Nintendo hasn't done the best job of growing up with us. The DS seems to get it right with some of the casual/puzzle games as well as flagship franchises (Zelda/Mario/Metroid), but otherwise I feel like my market (the older U.S. gamer) is being ignored/neglected by Nintendo and its developers. I have been loyal to Nintendo's products since the beginning, but haven't felt compelled to purchase a DS game since Castlevania: POR (and unfortunately stomach the growing presence of cutesy anime in its art and themes).
I believe in the DS as a platform and think after a year it finally started to see some great games, but the releases of the past 6 months have brought some doubt in my mind. I have zero interest in pretend pets, pokemon or any anime games with quasi-teen androgynes with giant eyes, blue hair and sugary-sweet demeanors. I'm not condemning Nintendo, but I'm just saying, "Hey, you forgot about my demographic, and with the PSP's price drop, Sony might be getting the money I planned to spend on you".
