DS Daily: A final fantasy?

Will there ever be a for-really-real Final Fantasy? As in the last one? Or could it be that such a thing would rend the very fabric of creation? We're aghast at the thought. Discuss amongst yourselves.

1. I don't think there will be a final Final Fantasy any time soon, at least. It's still very, very popular (FFXII was the fastest selling FF game in the UK/Ireland ever). Gaming without Final Fantasy is a horrible prospect too, would you agree?

2. You know, the only reason it was first called "Final" Fantasy is because it was Squaresoft's last ditch effort to make an RPG before going bankrupt. It would be their "final" fantasy RPG. To their surprise, however, everyone loved it, thus the series continued. The fact that the word "final" is in the title implies nothing more than that.

3. Regardless of that bit of trivia Urzu 7 (I thought most people knew that story by now... :P), the point is that it's a damn long series.

12 games of the main series, and probably just as many spinoffs.

The fact that they don't reuse much between games, as far as plot/characters are concerned is probably one of the reasons that the series has been popular for so long.

But how long will it be before we start getting tired of seeing the same elements underlying every FF game?

As long as Squeenix can give us a decent game engine (combat/magic/advancement), a gimmick, and enough plot and character fluff with each outing, I don't think sales will drop any time soon.

Still, I really hope Squeenix puts it to bed before it hits 20. Start a new series of RPGs with a new set of common elements if you like, but FF:XX just starts to look silly...

4. Considering all they're doing at this point is putting out 18 million ports/remakes/spinoffs, that series needs to die yesterday. AFAIK most of the talent that is responsible for the games I actually liked is gone from Square now anyway.

5. It seems to me that they're trying to at least shift the focus away from the franchise name with all of this Ivalice Alliance stuff.

CitizenGeek, I agree with you, the FF games are part of what makes gaming great for me, but I'm sure that this rose would smell just as sweet under another name.

6. yes there will be...
when square/enix dies...

which means it's not sometime soon.

7. Naw, Squenix will be making these games (and re-releasing these games) until the company goes belly up or when a totalitarian government system headed by RAGING DOUCHEBAG bans video games entirely in a last ditch effort to protect us from ourselves.

Personally, it's my favorite series in gaming. I'm not gonna get mad at Squenix for re-releasing games (something that lots of people have been irked about lately). I don't need to buy them and so long as the new games still come out, I'll be happy. I'm looking forward to FFXIII and FFXIII Versus, not to mention Crisis Core and the FFTactics remake on the PSP. Then there's Dissidia which could go one of two ways, the way of Ehrgiez or the way of Smash Bros. (which would be awesome).

FF1 was the game that got me into games way back when I was an itty bitty pre-schooler. The reason I picked up a PSone instead of the flashier N64 was because Nintendo had lost Square. Then the PS2 was my obvious choice because it was the king of RPGs and because FFX looked awesome.

8. I think people will get burned out on the "10 years of FF XIII" thing. I have a feeling people will stop trusting the Final Fantasy franchise after that, especially if a lot of those games are like Dirge of Cerberus or X-2.

9. It's my lifelong dream to see a game called "The Final Fantasy", somehow joining the story and characters of every title released before.

But this would only lead to "The Final Fantasy 2".

10. As long as the game continues to draw a huge audience and sell millions of copies, there will be Final Fantasies.

Posted at 4:54PM on May 12th 2007 by Jack

11. Wilerson - While im not sold on the idea of merging all the previous stories and characters, I do think "The Final Fantasy" would be a good name for the last game of the series.

I mean which one has more charm and sounds more final? Final Fantasy XXVI, or The Final Fantasy?

12. The Final Fantasy Finally

Posted at 10:54AM on May 13th 2007 by Snarkstar

13. It's like the Neverending Story. It ended after 2 or so hours. :( There was part 2 though but it ended after 2 or so hours as well. Talk about false advertising :D

14. I cant wait till Final Fantasy: XXX comes out :-P

15. If something continues to make money, it won't go away. Period.
