DS Daily: Sibling rivalry

For those of you have siblings -- whether you still live with them or not -- we thought we might ask about your gaming relationships with them. If you're a little older now and living apart, we're curious as to whether or not you both grew up gamers, and if you liked the same sorts of games. For those of you who still live with your rivals siblings, we pose the same questions, but we also wonder if you guys play together ... particularly when it comes to DS. Is everyone packing their own unit, or do you have to share?

1. My big brother got me into gaming when he bought a NES when I was 5. From there on we became massive gamers. We'd always play together, though we weren't really competitive (well except in International Superstar Soccer if anyone scored a "cheap" open goal, then fights would break out).

But then during the N64 era, he didn't really play as much (ie. got a social life) and though we still played together it wasn't really the same because I was now much better than him, so, whereas before we would've had the closest, most exciting photo-finish races in Super Mario Kart, now on Mario Kart 64 I would probably lap him.

He still keeps a casual interest in gaming and occasionally likes to see what I'm playing on my Wii and DS, but gaming is now purely my thing now. Thank God for online eh?

I imagine this is probably a familiar tale of siblings growing up in different directions. Sad really...

2. Well, as a kid, I was the oldest child by 9 years, so there wasn't much of a rivalry with the games. But, I now have 3 of my own and they are much closer in age, so I can speak about how we handle them.

In the portable dept, they each have their own DS and their own set of games. But, there isn't any overlap in the games, so they will share the games (occasionally). I also have my own DS, and so does my wife. There is some overlap in the games between myself and the kids (how else are you gonna play Mario Kart or Clubhouse Games against them?).

As for the non-portables, everyone just shares the one. No need to buy more than one PS2 and Wii -- there is only one TV they can play it on anyway.

All 3 kids like to play the games to varying degrees, with the oldest and the youngest being the fiercest competitors. Each one has their own favorite genres -- but all of them love to play Super Smash Bros. At least it's better to play that than to sit and beat up on each other in real life :D

3. @SmileyDude: Whoa, 5 DS, you almost don't need online.

I have two brothers, one that is 10 years older than me, and the another who is 13 years older than me, so there wasn't much rivalry. They got an Atari 2600 when I was barely a baby, and I played when I was a little kid. But we started playing together when I was six and got a Sega Genesis. As sixteen and nineteen-year old guys, my brothers wouldn't play always, but I first finished Altered Beast thanks to co-op with one of them.

Nowadays, I sometimes play with their children. I got a DSLite and a Phat and sometimes I let one of them use the Phat to play with me.

4. I actually hope my brother falls in a well and dies.

5. My brother is on the other side of the country, and we only have one common game.

But the wi-fi lets me show him my Pokemans.

6. My brother is two years older than me. We started gaming back in the days of the Atari. We mostly played together for a while (I remember me and him racing our neighbors kids to beat Final Fantasy first. We won). Our tastes have been fairly similar all along (mostly RPG-type games). We mostly played together cooperatively and would help each other out. Occassionally we had some rivalries.

He wasn't into it as much as I was as he got older, but we would still have pretty crazy games of Mario Kart (SNES, of course). We would battle for hours (battle course 1 - the only battle course). Occassionally our mom would check to see if we were alive since she said it sounded like we were killing each other downstairs.

That was about the extent of our console gaming relationship. He didnt' really get into consoles after SNES (though we had a brief stint competing in Monster Rancher for the PS One).

However, portable gaming is where the competition has been, and remains, the fiercest. I can remember road trips as kids sitting in the back seat beating the heck out of each other with our classic Gameboys (I dominated Tetris, and he dominated Scrabble).

Most recently we entered the world of the DS. We end up sharing a lot of our games, but we do have a few we are competitive with (namely Mario Kart, Clubhouse Games, etc.). I actually emailed him this morning before seeing this comparing our Puzzle Quest characters.

So that's basically our gaming relationship. It's been great having a brother into gaming as well. Makes it more fun. And it's nice to occassionally beat him in something.

8. My dad got me into gaming. I would spend the day in the basement trying to beat Super Mario Bros 3. I wanted to play as Luigi as I liked his color palette better but I relied on the pause button a lot so I reneged and used Mario. Then as the Genesis and N64 and PSX came out my younger brother took a real shining towards games especially RPGs like Pokemon and Square Enix. My brother could get competitive in some games trying to beat hi-scores or in certain arcade fighters like SSBM and SCII. I'm going to have a really fun time with him on Pokemon D/P. My third sibling, youngest sister, might occasionally pick up a game, she was better at DBZ Budokai 1, but has grown out of home consoles and TV unlike my brother and me. Big Brain Academy has her opened back to handheld gaming and is really interested in Brain Age 2 what with Sudoko also included not to mention she had a blast with Wii Sports. Also might give her EBA if I get Ouendan 2.

9. Nintendo doesnt care 'bout hardcores.

Nintendo used to be so cool now Nintendo only make casual crap like the Ds but thank God for the x360 and the PSP.

My interest in Nintendo is not dead Yet.Even if the Wii is getting port after portand shitty minigame collections SSBB and Metroid will be Gold.

Ds is pretty much Casual (Crap) paradise but hell I would enjoy Metroid Hunters even if Nintendo refuses to give us another Shooter in the DS..

10. Hmmm, yes.

Please tell me, what in the hell does that have to do with the topic?

11. I have two brothers (and my name should tell you that I'm a woman). We grew up playing video games on the Odyssey, Apple IIe, and the first Nintendo console. All three of us received Gameboys for Christmas when it was first available. We also loved to go to Godfather's Pizza because they had arcade games and our parents gave us a few quarters each to play games while we waited for the pizza. We weren't really competitive, unless you count hoping the other person dies quickly so you can get back to your turn. We loved the same games, like Pacman, Donkey Kong, that hamburger building game, Miner 49er, Zelda, Tetris (which now bores me), Castle Wolfenstein (which creeped me out), and the favorite: Mario Bros. We had a TON of console games but my faulty memory has erased most of the titles.

The weirdest thing is that of the three of us, I'm the only one who now plays video games. I visited my older brother twice this year and showed him my new DS, but he wasn't even interested in holding it. Zero spark. My younger brother played my DS for about 30 minutes, but when his character in FF III died he gave it back to me and never asked to play it again. (I suspect my younger brother would like an Xbox, because he plays when visiting his friends, but his wife won't allow it. Ahem.)

12. Me and my younger sister grew up gaming, we had games in common that we liked but we mostly played different games. We had a commodore 64, NES, SNES, and a Mac. I would play Myst(MAC), SimAnt(MAC), Zelda(NES, SNES); She would play Grandma's House(C64), SimCity(MAC), and StarFox (SNES).

She loves games like Civ, Sims, and other simulation and empire building games.

We share a love for Animal Crossing, and all things mario.

I was more into puzzle adventure type games and RPG's. Zelda was always a standard. I also love point and click adventures (Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk). And I'm into World of Warcraft.

13. To I_, few hardcore titles does not equal no hardcore titles. The DS still prints money.

I don't live with my siblings anymore. I was (am?) the oldest of four, and I threw a controller into their hands as soon as I was sure they wouldn't bite it. (The controller. Hands are cheaper to replace.)

I'm lucky enough to have a younger brother who serves exceedingly well as my best friend and rival, and who has done so faithfully for a long time. When I visit my parents' house, my mom always tells me how much she misses my brother and I standing in front of the huge TV in the living room and trash talking each other through best of 5 Tekken matches. Good times.

My siblings and I each have our own handhelds. I'm rocking a DS lite, while my younger brother has a DS phat because his hands are so big. My sister only has an SP, and my youngest brother only has an old GBA, but that's never stopped us from showing each other our Pokemans.

14. I'm two years older than my brother, and we've always been pretty hardcore gamers.

When we lived together we shared the systems, starting with an Atari 2600, up to the NES, SNES, Gameboy (Pocket), N64, PS1, Gamecube, and our first couple PCs.

Since we went to school, we've split off into getting our own systems. I have a PS2, a Wii, a 360, a DS Lite, and my PC. Before that I had a GBA as well, but that got sold so I could get the DS. :P

He has his Wii, his DS Lite, and his PC.

We've had our share of fights over the systems, but generally we work together. With a lot of games, the multiplayer part was a big thing because we had to be able to entertain two people at the same time. It sure pissed my brother off when I got into Square RPGs though. At least he likes them too now.

For the most part now, the only fights we have over gaming is when I want to play GH2. :P

15. My sister is 4 years older than me (she's 21, i'm 17) and we each have our own DS. Occasionally we'll play mario kart, or the mini games on the new super mario brothers, but other than that, we don't usually play together

16. My brother got a DS a fortnight ago.

It's great. He's 15, I'm 21, which isn't really much of an age difference when it comes to games. We play multi-cart mario kart, and i'm annoyed to say he's pretty much better than be already. He's unlocked everything in the game and beats me quite regularly, though it's always quite close which makes it fun. And local multiplayer on mario kart is way better than wifi as you can add computer players too, and what really is mario kart without a full field and a bit of chaos? My pokemon are better than his pokemon, though. And that's what matters.

As he's only had it for a short while, he's pretty much engrossed in those two games, despite my DS library pretty much being open to him. My quest now is to get him into puzzle games, but it's an uphill task. Before he got his DS he saw me playing picross and said something along the lines of "uh.. do you have any... y'know.. games?".

17. My Sister and I have both been long time gamers, Im now a sophomore in College and she is a senior in HighSchool. We both have different styles of Gaming, Shes more into RPGs while I devel in a little bit of everything(cept sports titles). When ever we go head to head sparks always fly, be it MarioKart,PerfectDark, Super Smash brothers or Soul calibur(which she continually owns me at). We both own a DS unit, I have a lite while she sports a DS Phat, Occasionally we battle it out. But over all I think we'll both be gaming for a LOOOONNNNGGG WHIle!

18. Sis is 5 years younger then me, and we've been gaming since the NES came out. Dad would join in occasionally in Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt, but that was it. Mario Kart on the SNES became a big hit in our house, but us kids were sore losers so head to head matches were very few.

Until the DS and Wii. We each have a DS and parents share one, and with everyone living in different places Mario Kart DS is a great way to spend a few minutes while chatting on the phone. There are lots of laughs to be had in trying to help dad, who couldn't beat 100cc, to come in first against computers without making it look like we rigged the game. And the Wii, family get-togethers have gone from everyone reading a different book and having a lazy day to everyone bowling and making fools of our selves.
