I find it interesting that Heroes of Mana now has a date of August 14 - the exact same date that Luminous Arc is due out. Could it be that Square Enix is trying to squash some competition?

If I understand right, Heroes of Mana is a real-time strategy game. Luminous Arc is turn-based. Gameplay-wise, they're night and day. If they were trying to compete with it, FFTA2 would be coming out then.

Yes, but the gameplay differences were night/day between Halo 2 and Metroid Prime 2, but sales of one killed sales of the other, as i recall.
This sort of thing still works.
