We're not going to say a word. You already
know how we
feel about the issue. And we're not even asking if 2D is
better than polygons, but just whether it has a place in the gaming world. We just want to see how this discussion
plays out, to be honest. Just remember, as in all DS Daily topics, and every other post in which you comment, as well as
pretty much everywhere, be courteous to your fellow gamers!

The single most sold series ever is a 2D.
Pokemon will sell a megabazillon copies without going 3D

I was almost depressed when I found out the DS could do 3D graphics, just because I considered the GBA to be last bastion of 2D graphics. Fortunately, that was the tail end of the "Everything must be 3D or fail" feeling that had come with the N64 and, to a lesser extent, Play Station, but I think it shows how I feel. I don't really think one is superior over the other, but I'd far, far rather be able to play fun/pretty games in both formats.

I think the time of 2D trying to look like 3D is over, but there are still times when 2D is more suitable than 3D.

I think that would depend on the game in question.
To a certain extent I think 2D will always be around, even if the hardware outdistances it with polygonal capability.

there is no way 2D is obsolete. as long as gamers who grew up on the atari, nintendo, sega, etc are around, there will be 2D games. of course, the games have to be good, too..

2d Will Always have a place when all of our consoles and handhelds are 2d displays. I dont care if the models are 3d, my TV, my DS, and all that stuff is a 2d display. The base ease will always make 2d have its place in the world. They are more intuitive games and also remind us of our roots.
Course, when we have 3d TVs, thats a different story...

2D done right is just stunningly beautiful. No 3D can compare to the kind of amazing artwork you can produce with 2D. Unfortunately, very few artists are willing to devote such careful care to a game that would probably sell without half the effort.
An awesomely crafted 2D RPG with stunningly beautiful backgrounds and character detail would lead me to put away any 3D RPG out there (provided the story is decent).
