Could new airline regulations affect DS owners?

Traveling sucks. There's just no other way to put it. What is between you and your final destination is a maze of complications that one single blog post couldn't begin to cover. And, for gaming enthusiasts traveling with their hobby of choice, things just got worse.

New regulations at U.S. airports dictate that those who're traveling with game consoles must remove them from their bags and process them as they would a laptop or DVD player. Of course, this doesn't affect personal electronics like MP3 players and, more importantly, your DS. But, could it in the future? Yes, and that's what scares us.

How often have you encountered the security people at the airport, only to be hassled due to their ignorance? "What is that, sir?" a guard asks. "Oh, it's my Nintendo DS, it allows me to brave the long trips in the enclosed tin cans we call airplanes." "Sir, I'm going to need you to come with me," the security person explains before I'm whisked away to a dark room, only to be prodded and poked at like some kind of choice cutlet of delicious meat.

But, who can blame them? It's not like it isn't their job to keep us safe, but would it kill them to be a bit more informed about the electronics they're supposedly keeping a close eye on. Besides, what's keeping people with bad intentions from creating devices to carry out their evil plans in the likeness of a DS?

How would one get around this new horrible future where these regulations are enacted for handheld consoles? Well, there isn't much you can do. Tuck your DS away in your carry-on bag (if you have one, otherwise slam that puppy in your pocket) and hope for the best. Once you get to the plane's gate, who's to stop you from saving worlds? Not a damn person, that's who.

One thing's for sure though: not only should you keep an eye out for thieves at the airport now, you should also keep an eye on the people keeping an eye on you. They're likely to snag your DS, say it's because of "security regulations" and go enjoy some New Super Mario Bros. on their lunch break.

2. What's the big deal? (Aside from the larger issues)

Laptop owners have been doing this, game console owners can do the same.

I used to take out my advanced (for it's day) PalmOS PDA and they looked at me like I was nuts and told me not to worry about it!

Nobody's taking anyone's DS. :D
They try to take mine and it's a boot to the head!

(Although a couple of jealous, longing stares from the uninitiated might be in the offing.) ;)

3. I agree with strider. Whats the big deal?

I travel with my laptop all the time, and its not that much of a hassle.

4. All you have to do is have it seperate from your other baggage, it's just because it shows up as a huge black box when they xray it, it's more of an issue of not being able to see through the entire bag, than an electronics issue.

5. Wait, you're NOT supposed to put the DS in they tray?

6. I just went on a flight today (augest 8th /07) and left it in my bag to be x-rayed, and they didnt take a look at it. And they can't take it away, nobodys stealing your ds.

7. I'm lost as to why this is a big issue. I keep my DS in my pocket at all times, so I always have to put it on the conveyor belt anyway. And if I didn't, well, it's an extra step just like with the notebook computers.

I'm the first to cry foul at our civil liberties being eroded, but I'm having trouble seeing that present in this scenario.

8. Ok, you think that towing about 50lbs in a carry on is tough. Try going through US security with it and see what happens. On the flip side, UK security is a breaze with that much gear. In the US mine had to go through twice! UK only once. I think that TSA needs to get the xray systems from the uk. UPGRADE FUN!

9. just been on two internal USA flights and I didnt remove my video camera, DS or PSP. Nothing was said. I agree however this is becoming a pain - one of the biggest scams at airport security checks is a 2 man team. First go through, nothing, then then second (who is just in front of you) is loaded with stuff that will make the alarm bells ring. Meanwhile you have already posted your laptop, psp, archos, ds, camera, digitial video camera etc through the scanner but are now stuck behind bad guy #2. Now bad buy #1 simply picks up your stash and wonders off.

You then get through security to be met by the horror of the situation and due to your complaining get taken to a dark room for some prodding !

Joy !

10. Unlike those that went on flights today, I just went on one from JFK airport (TMBG was great by the way) and I did have to take my DS out and put it separately in a bin. Just a stupid unnecessary hassle...
