DS Daily: What do you hate about the DS?

Yesterday's topic over on Wii Fanboy inspired us to ask a similar question here: what bugs you about the DS? Sure, we know you love it as much as we do, but nothing's perfect, right? Friend codes, hinge cracks, buttons that sometimes just stop working -- c'mon, lay it on us. Let's talk about our handheld's faults. Then we can appreciate the good moments -- like an overabundance of nicely-priced games -- that much more.

Yeah that damn volume slider pisses me off. It seems like you hit 90% volume about 30% of the way over.

1. No WPA or WPA2 support. I can crack a wireless network secured with WEP in less than ten minutes. I have to go to ridiculous lengths to play my DS online and keep my network secure in the process.

2. I'm tired of having ten million A/C adapters for every gadget I own. Why can't the DS just hav a regular mini-USB port to charge like every other worthwhile device under the sun?

3. Screen size. It doesn't make sense why Nintendo keeps pumping out all of these Grandma games without offering a Grandma-friendly handheld. How many 70 year olds do you think can read anything on a 2 inch screen? Give me a break.

I 3rd the volume slider. I do not like it at all. I had the the hinge crack repaired, no problems.

Other than that, I'm very content w/my DS lite. I've been playing the heck outta some GBA titles lately. Minish Cap, Golden Sun, and Klonoa. Good stuff.

I agree on the volume slider, and the use of the mic in most games. The only game that has used it properly is Brain Age, and even then it can't recognize bluuuuuue!

Calibrating the touch screen when your touch screen is whack. I don't know about you guys, but it takes over a hundred mundane taps on those damn squares, and by the time it finishes calibrating, it's not accurate because I've passed out on the touch screen and it's taking readings from where my nose is.

Maybe not that bad, but it still takes too damn long for me to calibrate.

First off, let me say that while I do have a lot of things to complain about, I love the DS. It's my favorite system at the moment....but it's just not perfect. The games sure are, but the console itself isn't.

Shoulder buttons that stop working: I haven't lost a DS to this yet, but a few of my friends have.

Power button placement on DS Lite: I've turned it off on accident many more times than I did with my DSphat.

The shiny finish on DSlite: Fingerprints galore. The GBA SP's finish (non shiny) is a lot better, IMO.

Games geared towards moms and little kids: It's not all gone to the dogs yet. Keep in mind that Contra is coming out for it...
Once all we have is my little pony and sudoku delux edition 8, then we can worry. But we're fine for now.
Also, Picross is actually a pretty damn good game, despite it's target audience.

Friend codes definitely blow...

And that's all I can think of for now.

*The lack of ergonomical thought put into the design of the product are killing my hands.

*I agree that the brightness control should have been part of the hardware design

*The large amount of crappy movie/cartoon/whatever tie in games for the system.

It bothers me that the ds doesn't have a built-in internet browser, with normal loading times and flash (at least I think the opera browser doesn't support it).

And an easier way to agjust the volume.

And a bit more graphical power (the games with action going on on both screens looks like gba games).

Other than that, I'm satisfied.

Oh, and Metroid Dread. I just want it.

You don't want firmware updates like the psp, cause then homebrew can brick your ds. I've done as much as i can with psp homebrew, but you really can't emulate without a chance of bricking. On the DS it's safe and pretty cool. Just go buy the Datel Games n Music at walmart for like $20, and you can put so much stuff on it. I put Quake on it. I put a Gameboy/Gameboy Color emulator, a NES emulator, a Genesis emulator, and a SNES emulator, and they all work great. You should try it out.

Everyone wants to make 3D games... Because we all remember what 3D looked like on our SEGA Saturns. Keep em' 2D, unless you actually have, um, talent in the department of 3D Video Game Development.

Touch Screen, because it's there. Why do I have to hit my extra item in New Super Mario Bros. No one EVER uses the select button. How about the L button?

GBA games are annoyingly inaccessible if you are constantly playing on a GBA. They should allow us to custom map buttons for GBA games. Inlcuding putting L / R on the two unused face buttons.

WiFi issues; Router / Security incompatibility, friend-codes, l...... aaaAa.a...g., lack of quality online games and / or quality online game modes leaves me to the same ol' races in MK: DD etc...

It's always weird when you tap the top screen thinking that thing you were just touching on the touch screen would be miraculously touchable in it's vertical accent past the fragile hinge.

Dead space and per-pixel offness. The seperation of the screens really sucks for games that use both screens for gameplay... sucks even more when they aren't in synch and aren't in line with each other.

I must be the only one who feels this way, but... honestly? I wish the DS wasn't getting flooded with mediocre games. It's a great system, but Metacritic reveals a terrible streak of yellow that's been happening since the DS was released. Good games (green) are about as common as awful games (red).

It was inevitable that with the DS's popularity every game maker would jump on the bandwagon and crank out crap, but I really wish Nintendo had some way to encourage third-party developers to meet some minimum standard of quality. I've got plenty of money and not enough quality games to spend it on.

Poppycock, what is this madness? This is not Sparta! The DS is perfect in everyway!

Usagi704, if you want PDA software, check out DS Linux, but you'll need a slot 2 device with additional ram.

The face that after you edit any settings or use pictochat feature you need to restart the system. It makes the use of the (already completely underpowered and over simplified) pictochat pointless.

If it showed who in the room had what game in and allowed you to immediately start that game it would be brilliant. Plus the fact the os cuts out when it runs a game. An alert to know someone else is within wifi distance and is playing the same game while your playing the same game would be brilliant.

Of course I know it's locked down for wifi so much (friend code drama) to keep the old men from talking to the children, but there's a limit. The friend code system is ridiculous and more of a hassle than helpful.

I hate that they made the DS Lites glossy! I know it's a small complaint, but it still irritates me that if I touch my DS, BOOM! It's covered in fingerprints. I also don't like how the D-Pad on my DS squeaks some when you use it. Oh yeah, and I agree with #5. I don't CARE about Cooking Mama remakes and other garbage! I want real games!

I second #5's post

Also, I've seen this on mine and my friend's lite, it can take 4-5 power ons for the DS to recognize a new game sometimes. Really irritating if you like to switch back and forth. Not sure if its just ours or if this is a more common problem

There should be a PDA cart available with the option of using another cart in the GBA slot that could accomodate a sd card. Nintendo could absolutely kill Palm with this.
