Remember how we lauded The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night on Game Boy Advance for being a beautifully drawn side-scrolling brawler with a nice combo system? Yeah, that's not happening on DS. Eternal Night on DS is a regular Spyro game, which for the DS means a PlayStation-looking 3D platformer for children. Which is fine for children. 1UP has new screens of all the polygons and such.There are plenty of 3D platformers in the world. What we need more of is Metroidvania-style free-roaming 2D action games.

Why aren't game companies realizing that New Super Mario Bros. did really well and making some more 3D sidescrollers? That game was fantastic. I don't know why they didn't make Castlevania more 3D on DS. Would have been awesome. It was a good game, but the 3D would have put it over the edge.
More games need to add this on. I doubt it would really be that challenging. Its not that hard on the processor (typically) and it allows more things in the game (i.e. the bendy platforms in NSMB).

@2:
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin did have some 3-D effects. Sure, not New Super Mario Brothers calibur, but some nice moving backgrounds and a few three-dimensional enemies. Personally, I love well animated two dimensional games, which Castlevania has been able to consistantly pull off.

#5: Thats why I said more 3d. The fact is it was a 2d game with a couple of 3d bad guys and a few 3d backgrounds. That hardly counts. To its credit, the 2d was done very well, and the 3d looked great when they used it. I'm just saying they should have used it a whole lot more.

So you're not so excited because of its "perspective"? For me, the 3D roaming style of play looks pretty advanced for the DS, so I shouldn't cite it as a problem. What I do worry about though is whether the structure of the game would be more or less the same as the DS version of A New Beginning, and aside from the change of interface I haven't seen much in that.
This is coming from someone that has followed Spyro from the beginning and has been through thick and thin to keep up with said purple dragon O.o
