It pains us to admit it, but the screenshots that've followed up yesterday's Metal Slug 7 announcement aren't quite the gorgeous scenes of 2D chaos we anticipated. Perhaps 1UP's usual wonky image scaling is to blame, or maybe the run-and-gun game just needs to be seen in motion -- either way, SNK Playmore has a playable demo available at the Tokyo Game Show, so we'll likely receive some hands-on impressions soon.
Though we haven't yet heard anything about Metal Slug 7's touchscreen features or any multiplayer possibilities, a "Combat School" mode in which you can complete specific missions and earn medals has been revealed. Hop in an SV-001 and drive past the post break for a couple more screenshots.

Wow, that looks pretty rough. I may have to bite the bullet on this one and just pay extra for the anthology on my PSP.
Some single-cart multiplayer might change my mind though.

I hear what youre saying Nate. I'll be the first to shoot down something as petty as graphics (Ive doing for weeks in defense of Two Worlds) but what can touch screen control offer me on a game like Metal Slug? There's always that obvious MS clone coming out. I forgot what its called but it looks clear and sharp.
Im just saying, I happen to own both a DS and a PSP and while I have the choice to go either way seeing these shots and not knowing about some cool DS speciffic features I probably go with the anthology on this one.
No need to get defensive. Geez.

Yup, as much of a DS fanboy as i am, this game is definitely better suited to the PSP. There's not much that dual screens or a touch screen can really add to the gameplay.
Honestly, those screens look messy as hell. :P

While I do think 1Up's resizing is uglifying them a bit, I think the real issue is SNK Playmore is just taking existing sprites and scaling them for the DS.
Which, by the way, is a HORRIBLE idea. Scaling is okay when it involves distance or the character growing/shrinking. But for general use? Terrible.
This is what happened with the Guilty Gear games on GBA and DS. Instead of redrawing new sprites appropriate for the smaller screen, they just used existing art and scaled it. They looked terrible because of this (and I won't begin to talk about how they played).
It wouldn't be so bad, I suppose, if GBA/DS had anti-aliasing for sprites. But it doesn't, so you get a pixelated mess instead of a blurry mess.
I really hope, though, that this is just for demonstration purposes. I will not buy it if the final game is just as ugly. You hear me, Playmore?

I just got back from TGS since I live near Tokyo. I got a chance to play Metal Slug since I'm a fan and I did buy the PSP version. The game looks much better in person. 1up's pictures doesn't do the game justice. The game looks pretty good on the little DS screen. BTW.. SNK had the best booth babes at show. Wee!!

I also made my way to SNK's booth to try out MS7 and low and behold, it played like a Metal Slug game. Graphically the game looks fine but I was a little disappointed in the animation. It never felt as fluid as some of the Neo-Geo/Arcade incarnations, But considering the fact that Neo-Geo was specifically built for 2D games, the slight difference is understandable.
Also SNK's boothbabes were seconded only by the XBOX girls. I wonder how many of them just go home and shower for 2 hours to wash off the 10 hours of geek staring.
