We're still thinking about remakes today on DS Fanboy, and, as we looked over Alisha's profiles of your top choices for future remakes, we wondered what motivated people's interest in having games remade. So we're just asking you.
Do you call for remakes of old games because you want to play them again in an updated form, or because you missed them the first time? Or a little of both?

Well, I think a mixture of both drives me, but let's just make up a hypothetical example: Yoshi's Island. Now there was a basically 'port' of this in the form of the GBA cart, so why Yoshi's Island DS? It takes all that was good about the gameplay before, throws in some new stuff, some completely new levels and ideas, fully utilizes the dual screen features, and brings it into a new age where todays kids can try it out too. It makes it easier to play. I mean I remember buying Yoshi's Island for my SNES with paper route money, the first thing I ever bought with my paper route money. And it makes me want to spend my money on the remake!

A little of both for me, but mostly because I'd like to play it in an updated form. Preferably though, there would be more updates than just purely graphical. For example, the developer can add more sidequests in an RPG and even an extra character or two (since most remakes are RPGs, I use that genre as an example).
I'm not really concerned with breaking the "purity" of the original game with additions in a remake. If I wanted to play the original game in it's pure form, I can simply get out the original cartridge.
However the biggest reason why I'd like to see remakes is that younger gamers may experience the games we played in the past in an "updated form". I know I'd be saddened (but would totally understand) if my kid would play FF6,CT,SoM,Z:LTTP and would say that the graphics make the game unenjoyable. Just like how classic novels in the past would be re-represented as movies to appeal to the modern audience, I think that old games simply need to be remade for a younger crowd. Of course, I'm thinking of games whose core elements are truly tested against time.

>Impact: For the acronym-challenged, those would be Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Zelda: Link to the Past, and .. uhh.. I don't know a SoM off hand.
Personally, I had a long period when I didn't play much and missed out on many of these games. Chrono Trigger is one that people keep talking about that I'd love to play, but I don't have the time to find the original cartridge, system, etc. The Final Fantasy games are another - FF7 is still really expensive, even for a used PC version.
Also, I like the portability of the DS - especially the ability to just close it and know it is in sleep mode automatically. With a baby in the house, sometimes I have to drop everything and go running.

Usually I want a remake because I have fond memories of a game, and enjoyed it the first time around, so I want to play it again. Honestly, it's not even about having it in an advanced format. For me, the thrill is having it on a console that is easily accessible and I can take anywhere. I don't have to hook anything up, I just plug and play. Honestly, there are quite a few SNES games that I wouldn't mind seeing on the DS in their original format. Pixels actually thrill me.
However, when I see remakes getting a graphics upgrade, or enhanced story, it thrills me to no end because the games that I've loved for years are becoming even better.
Throw in the advanced gameplay that the DS allows for and combining the fact that i know I'll enjoy the game with amazing nostalgia, and I'm all over it.

For me it would not be both... But i think what drives me to want REMAKES is the fact that a certain game could have better graphics or different kind of stuff that the original did not have making the experience even better than when i first played the game... a perfect example would be Zelda games (A Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time) were games that can only benefit with the new technology may it be the graphics or the gameplay itselt (Wii or Ds), i have been hoping to get such remakes but it probably wont happen... Besides sometimes Older Gamers (Myself included) tend to think that since we already played the game there's no need to play it again therefore not worth it of a remake but we forget that while we have been playing games since we were kids there are other gamers that were too young or that were never insterested or never heard of such games and that they never experienced what we have been playing or played for years... If the remake improves upon the old one then i see no problem but if its done just to get some fast cash while milking everybody with the same game over and over again then its just not worth it... Nintendo seems to do this but they do it to improve the experience such examples are Yoshi's Island DS, New Super Mario Bothers, Mario Kart DS, Star Fox DS, so i applaud Nintendo that only for getting the formula right on the first time but also improving upon when doing the remake... here's to Nintendo... and yes i Know Nintendo is not the only one doing this but everytime Nintendo drops another remake is always improved from the previous experience unlike any other developers...

Just for fun. Some because I missed the fist time. But usually just to play an updated version of a game that I love.
