Okay, so maybe our reasons for loving homebrew are slightly more selfish than his, but we're all on the same page here, amirite? Too bad Nintendo won't ever feel the same way, due to the high potential for piracy.
Carmack also mentioned that the DS was the most fun platform that he has worked on to date. Speak no more, Mr. Carmack -- you had us at hello.

Well, I hope he'll continue to develop for it, hopefully beyond a cellphone game. I'd love a wolf3d/doom/quake game.

Are you shrroming? I mean, it's fun to just spurt out popular franchises and say it'd be cool on you favorite platform... But FPS games need to stay off the DS Platform. While the controls are SLIGHTLY better then the PSP controls.

Agreed about the FPS on DS. But why no "official" homebrew? MS gave us XNA; there's not even any reason you *have* to charge for it. Nintendo *could* release an SDK and a runtime that sandboxes your code, but they choose not to. Same with Sony and the PSP.
As long as that's the case, well, I love my custom firmware, and R4DS.

Carmack's always been very supportive of such things.
He was one of the first (and only) game developers to release his game engines under the GPL.
