In some deeply weird alternative universe, perhaps one in which Japanese people actually bought Microsoft consoles and England's footballers weren't quite so irredeemably rubbish, we might never have experienced Super Mario Bros. as we know it. Instead, we could have been playing Super Mario Sisters.Alas, Nintendo of America never did follow through on a trademark application it filed in February, 1990 for a game called "SUPER MARIO SISTERS." The application was abandoned almost two years later, depriving us all of an estrogen-fuelled version of the world's favorite platformer.
Go past the break for a grab of the application.

Lemme guess, the boobed, respective characters would have been Bario, a large-breasted bar wench, and Guigi, known locally as 'Goo'igi, which I think it explanatory in itself. x_0

I'm guessing they may have just registered it for protection's sake, so that someone else didn't try to milk the series' popularity with a similar name. Nintendo from time to time buys variant trademarks not for the intent of use, but just for the intent of protection (the recent "Pokemon Water Blue" registration along with the Fire Red and Leaf Green registrations in the US is the first that comes to mind)

Ahaha, that's pretty funny.
I'm thinkin' more along the lines of Maria and Luigana.
And they have to constantly rescue Prince Banana. But it's hard because the evil Bowsy keeps getting in the way.
Ooh that would be just fab.

So that's why Peach had to go save the world on her own. A lady just can't get a break.

Anyone remember the similar-yet-legally-distinct "Giana Sisters" for C64?

I remember the "Great Giana Sister".
The stage design was pretty cool and combined with the many different enemies and traps, the game had more variety to offer than the first SMB.
A very well done clone. I need to play this again sometime (never managed to compelte it back in the C64 days, but I was like 4 years old and was only allowed to play half an hour a day)
