A rather final-looking boxart has shown up on Amazon for
N+, Atari's upgraded remake of Metanet Software's brilliant freeware platformer
N. It lacks the final ESRB rating, and contains some kind of "FPO" code, but it looks otherwise ready for stores. It features the two most important elements of
N+:
jumping and
gold, and keeps it simple otherwise. The image also appears on Atari's page for the game, so it's probably safe to look for
that picture when you go to buy it.
But when can you do that? Amazon and Atari both say March 18th, while Gamestop says February 26th. We're
guessing that the later date is the real one, because that's pretty much how it works. That gives us just ... not nearly enough time to finish all the official single-player levels in
N.

FPO stands for 'For Positioning Only.' Meaning that the final image will be completely different and that the FPO should be used as a placeholder when proofing the rest of the page (er, webpage in this case).

Oh man, I fell in love with this game a year (I think?) ago.
I played it on a flash game site, finished the first 30 episodes, then realized that it wasn't even the official game. I was so excited to find out there's 100 total.
I still have tons of levels to go through in the game, actually.
It gets really hard after a while, and the user-made levels don't get any easier.

How does it handle the scrolling? In the Flash game you need to know what's on the other side of the screen a lot of the time, such as when you're jumping for a distant platform or switch, or you need to know when a robot is about to come after you.

Bottom screen shows a close-up view, top screen is zoomed out to the whole level. It works great.

I simply cannot wait until March. I think I'll do some irreparable damage to my body so my soul can escape and travel through time to reach March 2008; then I will take possession of some other body and play until I die of hunger.
Incorporeal souls can travel through time, right? Anyway, too late.

@JC
Thanks for the clarification. I love me some N and am moving this to my short list for sure, if they have overcome the difficulty of scale.
And that box art looks perfect.

Seriously,
I had no idea this game was coming out for the DS. I love it! I got so hooked on my PC with it. The physics engine is amazing. And never have I had as much pleasure watching what happens AFTER I die in a game than in this one. Can't wait to pick up my copy when this is released.
Peace,
manaman

You forgot "touches mine, explodes, body parts fly everywhere" or "gets electrocuted by small, fast robot thingy" or "is crushed by fast moving electrified box" after your little blurb there...

Heh heh,
Yeah, those are always my favorite parts. Such a classic platformer. One of the best pieces of freeware I've ever come across. Excellent game. Deserves to be put onto the DS.
Peace,

I really hope they decide in the end to let you keep downloaded stages in the cartridge's memory. Last I heard, that was going to be a PSP only feature.

This would be a great birthday present if it does come out March 18th! Though if it came out before that it would be cool too. I like early birthday presents and cake.

This is one of the coolest games in the history of gaming. When I saw that this was coming out for the DS I said, "You are a sign that the DS is the best purchase I've ever made."
When you get as excited about dying as you do about winning, you know you have a great game on your hands.
