Yesterday's New York Times article featuring the heartening words of our own Reggie Fils-Aime also included a few choice tidbits from analyst Michael Pachter, who still seems to think that the Nintendo DS is "a kid's device." Despite the release of a mature game last year, the move toward media and other DS uses in Japan, and the thriving all-ages homebrew community, the DS just can't seem to shake the image. Of course, we turn to you to give us the truth. Our best guess is that we've got readers who run the gamut of ages. Is that the case?DS Fanboy Poll: Only for kids?

I don't think your average pokemaniac is going to be voting on a blog poll. Even still, the DS has an exceptionally wide audience.

Ahem.
I'm pushing 41 and love pokemon. First one I ever played was Diamond/Pearl - which prompted me to buy used versions of Emerald and FireRed.
Currently, DragonQuest Monster:Joker owns my soul.

Obviously a lot of kids who do not read DS Fanboy own a DS so the poll results may be a bit unjust.. however, in Japan, Europe and the US especially, many adults rock a DS.. I'm 28 for instance and play everyday, note that I've been playing video games for 23 years though.. my girlfriend who is 25 and NOT your typical gamer, also owns a DS Lite and has since she started playing, half a year ago or so, beat New Super Mario Bros (inluding collecting ALL Star Coins) beat Yoshi's Island, Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Kart etc. Which is very cool I think as this is her first game system..
So sure, I'm convinced that DS and DS Lite owners are divided equally amongst kids and adults. The games are varied and there's something for everyone, which is why the DS system is extremely popular.

Well, it's not like we're going for scientific results here... but even with just this poll, that's quite a few people who are clearly not children, and that's the whole point. The DS attracts a wide audience all over, and it's really time people stopped assuming that it's for kids only.

I'm 21, 22 in a few days and I like my DS. We've fallen out recently though and the PSP has taken over my life. Which is odd considering I'm normally a Nintendo fanboy, PSP is the first non-Ninty console I've bought.
My uncle (50), cousins (22-32) and even my parents (54) all play their DS's. My sister (15) stopped playing for a while but just ordered herself Cooking Mama or something.
It's not everyone in da wooorld like. But it's doing very well in all age groups in my family.

The DS is a GREAT gaming device, with a lot of potential to do more as we all know, for ALL ages. I got my first one a little over 2 yrs ago when I finally gave in and got the red Mario Kart special edition. My Dad, who will be 90 in April, saw mine a little over a year ago and wanted one of his own so I got him a Lite with Brain Age, Big Brain Academy and a Golf game. He LOVES it!!! A month ago I wanted to get my hubby playing so I got a new crimson and black Lite and a few games, including the new Zelda title. We're having a blast now playing different games together and I think I've got him hooked. Oh, and btw, I'm 50 and he's 52. I've been gaming since I had a Pong knock-off in the 70s and I got him into gaming when we met 15 yrs. ago. To top all this off my friend, who is 54 and gaming about as long as me, added her first DS to her home in addition to her Wii. Why? Her 8 yr. old grandaughter got her hooked when she let Grandma play with her DS one weekend! Plus her youngest son, mid-20s, loves his more than any of his gaming consoles EVER, or so he says. Yup, a very universal gaming platform IMO. Now, back to Phantom Hourglass for me. :)

A ps to my above comment (and yes, this is the same person, that comment picked up my old nom-de-plume, which is my name, from my original Blogsmith registration that I forgot about) ... My Dad really DOES use his DS and recently asked me what other games did I think he'd like because after about a year, I gave it to him for his 89th birthday, he's bored with the ones I gave him. So I'm gathering some new titles for him for his 90th birthday. I can only HOPE I'm that with-it *if* I live that long!
