In case you missed it, you can see from the video above that Advance Wars: Days of Ruin has a much darker style than its predecessors. The gameplay is looking great and we're liking the mature style, especially after hearing some of the reasons behind it.
1up recently interviewed Hitoshi Yamagami and Masaki Tawara of Nintendo's Software Planning and Development Department, who shed some light on the darker style behind the game. They decided to drop the light-hearted scenario of the game because they didn't want to depict war positively. The more realistic tone then led to different visuals and a few tweaks to the gameplay. While the fundamentals are the same, Yamagami and Tawara say that Days of Ruin will have a faster pace than before.
Because the previous Advance Wars games were great in of themselves, change to the series can seem a little daunting. Still, we like it when developers take risks, and we think the game will be all the better for it. We'll find out for sure soon enough, though, as the game is scheduled to release in a few weeks.

It looks pretty good.
Probably would look better if it wasn't GameVideos.com though...
I haven't played any Advance War games but if it's like Fire Emblem it has to be good.

The Advance Wars series is totally awesome, but it definitely has room here and there for a little improvement...so some changes might be a really good thing. Here's hoping.
The new style looks kinda awesome, actually. I just hope it doesn't get too bogged-down with a melodramatic, uninteresting story or anything. Fire Emblem is great for an epic story released in pieces between fun fights, but Advance Wars is great for the "less talkie more fightie." I kinda hope things stay that way, because the Advance Wars universe doesn't lend itself well to complicated character stories.

I think a change like that could easily happen. It's all about the story. If the story presents itself to be an enthralling account of war in the veins of Ace Combat, then I don't see a problem with it. As long as the multiplayer modes and an entertaining batch of campaign missions occur, regardless of the story, this is going to be a must-buy.

It just warms my heart to know that even at armaggeddon, humanity will still be trying to blow itself up.

This for me is THE big release on DS for Quarter one , if it wasnt for this game i would never have even bought a DS , i got addicted to the original GBA Advance Wars a few months ago whilst messing with a GBA emulator for my PC , it wasnt practical to lug a PC around with me so i decided to purchase a DS , i cant say its my very favorite game but its something that you come back to time and time again and is extremely addictive , im only a fraction the way through the DS version but it takes over half an hour regularly to clear a level and with so many levels it is a bargain at 15.00 quid 2nd hand.
Cant wait for this new release , i hear it has wifi internet , that would be fantastic if you could find someone who wont disconnect etc .
Hope us in the UK ( Europeans ! yuck dirty word ) get a release with everyone else but doubt it .
