Over the past year, we've been fed a few tiny tidbits on
Maple Story DS, the ARPG take on the popular MMORPG, and despite the few details we've heard (and seen), it seems the title is
still set to hit this year. In a new interview with Gamasutra, Nexon's Stephen Lee reports that the company has been "aggressively developing" the DS title, and also shed some light on the lack of online multiplayer. Lee says this game will be very different from the MMO, though the game will boast "some features that support multiplayer," but the primary focus is on the single-player experience. While this may continue to disappoint those who'd hoped for even a local multiplayer
Maple Story experience on their handheld, for others who tend to play alone anyway, this may actually be even more appealing.
According to Lee,
Maple Story DS will launch first in South Korea, and from there ...
the world.

the community on maplestory was so terrible that i am greatly looking forward to a single player experience, especially if the level grind will be approachable. the online should be secondary for the ds, even if it was the focus of the original.

i agree 100%. i tortured myself for a year and half playing that game and putting up with snot-nosed brats ksing and selling things for exorbitant amounts of money because everyone had bots to make money/level up and everyone just generally acted like asinine morons. i was close to level 40 when i didn't have to time to play the game for a month or so and when i came back, i realized how lame the whole thing was and i haven't played since.
at any rate, i, too, look forward to playing this game in a single player setting

Yeah,
I totally hear you. I enjoyed playing with a small handful of people I met there, but, on the whole, I was enjoying myself much more when I was just exploring on my own. I also hated the amount of effort it took to level. If this game is based more on story and quests with a slightly easier time leveling, I might just pick this up.
Yup,

Jesus Christ, do I hate Maplestory. It was great in the beta days, even better when global first launched, but when the cash shop actually came, it started going down the toilet for me. All those "i ♥ oOxZiMrlYaGiRLxOo" and back and forth flaming over the megaphones really makes you want to find the nearest person and stick a megaphone down their throat.

I can chime in....ugh ugh and more on the MMO aspect of Maplestory. I played in the beta and I enjoyed it fairly well but then it went down the tube. Like many freebie MMOs it's loaded with brats and all that goes with it.
Now as a stand-alone...I might just enjoy this! I look forward to seeing what comes out of this.

I dont know.. what i like about maple is actually meeting people from all around the world. Im lvl 96 now and after ur 80 most players are 16+ years.. no kid withstands the long grindings.. so you can make "normal" friends after this lvls. But anyway.. sounds good the ds version.

Multiplayer is fun but I like playing alone as I don't like to be fighting a balrog or something and a nub comes up and says money plz lmao so basically I'm all for single player yet wifi would be good to the people that actually enjoy being harrased by nubs or haning out with their friends lol.

wheatshelf is right. but so is everyone else, mmo's cant pick and choose out the jerks that play or the people that play to say in the game that it's stupid. but a single or multi-player version on the ds would be nice, i just wish nintendo would say a general release date, like september, or june. but wouldn't a single player version of an mmo be redundant? mmo's are ment to be played with others.

I can live with no MMO capabilities, but unless there is DS Wireless Communication, I'm not buying this. I would love to play by myself, level, and all that fun stuff. But I would also like to take my leveled up character, and go on adventures with my friends, and their characters. Typing would be extremely hard, but you wouldn't need it if you were playing with the people right next to you. WiFi could be used for online trading, kind of like Pokemon's GTS. You get put up an item for trade and say what you want for it, or you could look at what other people put up and what they want for it. And the BIGGEST problem I had with the MMO was the stats. If there was a system where you could choose how much of each stat you wanted, it would be much better. And a great advantage of it being offline is the name; you wouldn't have to continuously try to guess a name that wasn't used, or add numbers to your name. You could just pick the name you want. I think it has potential, but if all this would cost Nexon an extra dime, I doubt it would happen...
