According to an interview with
Square Enix president Yoichi Wada, Japan could be playing
Dragon Quest IX as soon as (whenever Square Enix decides to release it.) He told Bloomberg Japan that the game is almost finished, and that they are currently in the process of tuning
whatever kind of wireless functionality and insuring the "important" balance between multiplayer and single-player. So, basically, they're in the final stages of creating the game.
This doesn't necessarily mean that the game will be released anytime soon -- we'd expect fall at the earliest. This is going to be the cornerstone of Square Enix's 2008 lineup, so it's going to be a holiday release in
whichever year it comes out. We're just glad to hear it hasn't been cancelled or moved to another console (though the DS wasn't mentioned, we're pretty sure that would slow development.)

Current trends continuing, Dragon Quest X will probably hit the Wii, but Dragon Quest IX is making the DS look like a Dreamcast, and i'm not worried about how neat it will look

As excited as I am about this coming out for the DS, I actually hope the next one will be for PS3. Because by the time that would come out the PS3 would most likely be cheaper and have enough good games to warrant a purchase. It would be nice to have the next DQ on a home console.
Now if only we could get a confirmation that the IV-V-VI remakes will be released outside of Japan...

You guys are forgetting all the Dragon Quest fans who bought the DS just for this game. Unless Square-Enix wants to shit on all those fans, DQX should be on the DS.

DQ fans will go wherever the game goes. Square-Enix knows that, so they won't give two thoughts to "shitting" on their fans.
Still, it would be nice to see DQ-X on the DS. Or, at the very least, a real-time strategy RPG a la Revenant Wings (I just love that game).
Look at us, IX isn't out yet, and we're already talking about X.

What ArmiMaan said. Also, new games in the main DQ series typically show up on whatever the most popular system is at the time. With that said, that DQIX is on the DS makes the most sense, and I wouldn't be surprised to see DQX on the Wii.

I don't think we will see it on the Wii. Remember by the time DQX is out it's been a few years and of the current consoles I would think the PS3 would be a better choice, seeing as VIII was on PS2.
I don't mean to sound like a PS3 fanboy (I don't even own one), but it's time that the PS3 got more jRPGs. :)
But who knows, DQX might come out for a still unreleased console!

I think Enix will wait until DQIX gets a few years. They did that with VIII-IX transition. I'm not worried about quality, because VIII was a masterpiece. They can pull it off again.
