Promotional Consideration: Flower, Sun, and Reused Video

Promotional Consideration is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.

As the official hub for the Flower, Sun, and Rain DS remake, the game's Japanese site embraces Goichi Suda's (and Grasshopper Manufacture's) hip presentation, its background shifting through a collection of blown-up and blurred screenshots. Even if you don't understand the Japanese characters strewn around its pages, it's evident that something very cool is taking place. The site added a television commercial to its list of updates late last week -- jump past the post break for the video and more.

Mysterious ruins. Mysterious girls. Mysterious corridors to run through!

We're usually annoyed when video game commercials show less than a second of in-game footage, but we accept that Goichi Suda's projects are more about their style and atmosphere, as is this case with this noir-ish ad, Flower, Sun, and Rain's protagonist searching for and chasing something always out of reach. Similar to No More Heroes and Killer 7, you'll take on the role of assassin Sumio Mondo, exploring the adventure game's eponymous hotel. Through reasons unexplained, you're forced to repeatedly relive the same day, solving problems for the FSR hotel's guests while a bomb ticks away in an airplane.

The PS2 release of Flower, Sun, and Rain in 2001 was never published outside of Japan, so we didn't realize at first that the clips in this DS commercial were actually taken from a promotional music video included on the PS2 disc!

It's a cheap way to put together a commercial, but we think the resulting DS ad turned out quite nice. All video games should have accompanying music videos!
