DS Daily: Is color enough to justify a second DS?

Would you ever buy a second DS, solely because you like the color? It sounds silly, but time and again this blogger has come close to shelling out for one of those Enamel Blue Lites that appeared exclusively in Japan, only to back down at the last minute. It may sound like a fairly ridiculous reason to purchase a second version of any gaming system, but then gamers aren't always rational people, and DSes are desirable and just about cheap enough to justify impulse purchases.

Of course, some of you might well be purchasing a second DS in the very near future, as the cobalt blue DS Lite hits U.S. stores today. If you are, tell us about it!

I've been tempted for a long time to get a pink DS Lite, but it's been out for a while and I haven't done it -- even though my white Lite has a cracked hinge and a dead pixel. So I guess for me color is not enough to justify a second DS -- though back in the day when I had a phat I bought a second phat in Japan because they had pink ones (that was before pink was available in the US). I gave the first phat to a friend as a birthday present, along with a copy of Nintendogs. But I was feeling rich then. (I *wasn't* rich, mind you ... :-)

I still have my Electric Blue DS Phat as well; I've had impulses to buy a DS Lite, but I think of the money wasted that could be put to use for games and then I stop.

DS Lites are just so sleek and pretty, it's hard to resist them. I'll probably get the cobalt for my boyfriend for his birthday. Then we can finally play together, and I get to oogle the pretty new color!

I want to get a Cobalt one - I used to have a nice blue DS Phat then the speakers went kaput, and I was upgraded to the Red/Black which was a nice upgrade, even if I liked the size of the old style DS. However, had I known about the Cobalt DS, I would've waited until it was released to have it "fixed".

Sort of. I bought the cobalt/black one last night to replace my pink one... but I'm sending the pink one to my mom, who is a big fan of Brain Age's sudoku and whose birthday I'll only miss by a few days this way. :)

Still don't have one. Still waiting for a green one. And none of this oh-we-only-bothered-to-do-the-top bs. Come on Nintendo! Don't you want my $130??

I think if they released a light / lime green DS Lite I'd be tempted (already have the pink Lite), or if they remade the Japanese Mew-themed DS Phat, but in pink DS Lite form. I used to have two DS Lites and it was really great to be able to plays games with a friend who didn't have one, or even invite a non gamer into a round of Mario Kart download play on the spot.

Just like I justified getting my onyx lite by giving my phat to my sister after she became addicted to nintendogs, I might end up getting a new cobalt/black and give my current one to my mom who has found herself addicted to animal crossing.

I got a silver DS for Christmas 2004. And got my Pokémon Dialga and Palkia DS Lite in May 2007.

My first choice for DS Lite was Enamel Navy but when that Pokémon was revealed for launch for Pokemon DP in Japan I had to have one. Then it became available on Pokemon.com and my brother spent a good amount of his money on it for me (having just spent $500 for a Wii for me Christmas 2006)

I have no need to get a second DS Lite so I probably won't. But once I have enough money I believe I'll get the Cobalt/Black one for my brother.

My current DS Lite is a little beat up. The screens are mildly scratched, there's a few stuck pixels along the bottom, and the battery charge isn't holding like it used to. Now alone this wouldn't be a big deal, but knowing there's a new color out I'm planning on picking a new DS up and trading this one in. If I can get $80 for my Onyx DS I'll be good, might even sell it to a friend for $70. But otherwise I'm not willing to pay much more than $50 overall to upgrade.

I've thought about getting a new DS period (since my Phat is ollllld) mainly for the brighter screens and sleeker look. But then again, I don't really play my DS excessively, plus the newer model looks less durable, plus my DS works perfectly, so there's no REAL reason to replace it.

To answer the question, no I would never get a newer version of a system based solely on the color. I can see how one might consider it (the Zelda gold DS is boo-ti-ful!) but as soon as one realizes that it's also over a hundred bucks out of their own pocket for something that isn't necessary in any form of the word, that notion would (should) quickly pass.

I have the pink DS, but when I saw the metallic rose one I had to have it...so at one stage I had 3 ds's, including the gen 1 DS...when I saw the red and black one, I was really set to buy it...but well I didn't...

Having 2 DS's are handy in case one is out of batteries...with PW 4 coming out, it will be useful!!!

Sorry that didn't work. I was attempting to upload an image of the so-called "lime green" color, which is richer and more fashionable than the name normally suggests.
