The only thing that comes to mind, for us, is creating a DS themed after our favorite sports team and slapping a sticker on the top of the clamshell. And considering that we don't partake of the DS line-up of sports titles available, as we often favor the console variety, we can't really see that much appeal in giving the DS a splash of color.
But then we start thinking about what people with actual artistic ability could do with a professional paint job like this on their DS. True, most folks who mod their consoles and handhelds might prefer to do the painting themselves, as it all ties into the whole I made this part of it, but perhaps the time saved or price are the factors that could weigh heavily on someone's decision. Then again, we don't really know how much it would cost to paint something like a DS. Our skills lack.
Or maybe this can be a really expensive prank. Snatch a friend's DS, send it in and have them paint it puke green on top of puke green, that kind of thing? Actually, that might not be a bad way to get your own DS, because if our friend did that to us, we'd tell them to keep it.

That's very cool, but I could buy a whole new one for the same price as getting mine redone. And I'm sure people would think it blasphemous to re-color the gold DS anyway.

You had me all excited that I could finally get a green DS, but noooo, still has white accents.
And I'm underwhelmed by their selection of green.
That said, I wonder how well would this hold up with the use a handheld gets (as opposed to a PS3 or Xbox).

...or, you go to DealExtreme.com, buy a few DS shells and mix and match to your liking.
I guess if you value warranty and stuff you would probably go with this way though ( its bloody expensive though), and I guess you get a better selection of colors.
Oh well, beggars cant be choosers

ColorWare is known for doing quality work. Their stuff looks like it is straight from factory. It holds up very well to regular use. Knowing what goes into painting a DS (http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/12/27/purple-ds-purple-ds/) I can say that the price they are asking is reasonable.
I will add though that there is something far more satisfying about doing it yourself. Someone else mentioned getting replacement shells and mix/matching colors. I would take that a step further and say, "Get a replacement shell and some model spray paint and go crazy". Then if you really mess something up atleast you still have the original shell to fall back on.

I really, really would love to get mine custom colored, especially since it's black and I could get a nice purple and black theme going with it.
Unfortunately, it is WAY out of my price league.
