Yesterday, Activision revealed its solution to these conundrums: the "Guitar Grip." The idea seems straightforward enough: plug the above accessory into the GBA slot of your DS, grab your guitar pick stylus, and strum away on your touchscreen while pressing buttons to coincide with cascading on-screen notes. Fair enough. Considering the limitations of the DS, this isn't a terrible idea.
But here's what irks me: a considerable -- no, a huge -- part of Guitar Hero's appeal is the guitar controller itself. When I'm (cough) "rocking out" on one of the home console versions of Guitar Hero, I'm Brian May on stage at Live Aid, at least in my head. In reality, of course, I'm a deluded cretin, but the point still stands: Guitar Hero is at its best when it's letting us live out our rock star fantasies, and that's fun. Yours truly is going to struggle to get the same sensation of being a total rock god just by plugging in the Guitar Grip.
I hate to say this but ... perhaps Guitar Hero should have stayed on home consoles, if the Guitar Grip truly is the best solution. Is that too harsh?

na, I think it's pretty much the truth to say it like that... I really can't imagine to rock my socks off on the ds with that gripthingy.. it just won't give off the same feeling as a somewhat real looking plastic guitar, I think. At least it does not convince me to buy it at all... I'll rather stick with my PS3 version... and anyways... I also do not see why I would want to play Guitar Hero outside, which would be the only reason to buy it since I can play the "real deal" at home... I do not think it's the perfect game for a bus ride... The only possible way it makes some sense to me is for people who do not own a home console with Guitar Hero... but even then it just seems like an awefully... lite version of the real thing. In a negative way.

If some Chinese company comes out with a big fretboard controller for the DS, I might get Guitar Hero for it. Otherwise, forget it. This thing looks like it completely defeats the purpose of a game that's supposed to simulate guitar playing.
As someone on another blog said, "Guitar Hero? Looks more like Accordion Hero."

2.-Strumming on the touch screen?....i thought they said "hey guys we wont have touch screen strumming"
I'll probably get it either way but it will not live up to console versions

Personally I think the guitar grip looks like fun. They could hardly make a guitar shaped controller for the DS and I think this looks like a reasonable solution for a handheld while still remaining portable enough to carry around. I look forward to trying it out.

Of course it doesn't deliver a console experience, but the idea of rocking anywhere is pretty awesome.

I don't think it's harsh. I've never played a guitar hero game before and even I know most of the appeal is the guitar it's self.
Also from the looks of it holding the DS with your left while you strum with your right looks to be quite cumbersome.

I have to say I agree. The whole point with Guitar Hero is the guitar itself. Taking the guitar controller out of GH is like taking the touch screen out of the DS.
And I have to say I was looking forward to Ukulele Hero :(

Attention Homebrewers
Please make accordion Hero that uses the Guitar grip when this comes out! This could also mean a good amount of custom GH games on the DS, if the homebrew scene can make use of the peripheral as well that is...

To me, it doesn't have to mimic the game at home, it just has to be fun. This sounds like it could be fun and even innovative. When can I pre-order? :)

I agree with RP. If they were going to make Guitar Hero for the DS, I think the guitar grip is a good solution. Also, five buttons wouldn't not have worked, because your hand is strapped in place to hold the DS.
As someone who enjoyed the Guitar Hero games, but who does not own a console of any variety, I will most likely be buying GH:OT.

I really don't need the guitar for the game to be fun. My entire family are a bunch of Guitar Hero & Rock Band freaks.
However, all of us think that the DS version is going to be amazing, and the Guitar Grip REALLY surpassed our expectations.
The guitar is nice, but it isn't what makes the game, IMO. I enjoy actually playing the music more than the configuration of the peripheral.
And being able to take it on the go is going to be absolutely awesome, in my opinion.
(I would also like to point out that I love the fact it only takes 4 buttons instead of 5. I have VERY short fingers, and I can BARELY play Guitar Hero/Rock band on anything higher than Easy because my fingers simply don't reach very well, even when I slide).

If it came with a separate tiny guitar, it would be the envy of gamers everywhere.
Cats belonging to halo 3 legendary owners would submitted to ever new and more humiliating photo shoots.

Seriously, did anyone actually considered the console 'guitar' accessories to be real guitars at all? Obviously they're not.
A 'real' Guitar Hero would need to have at least 20*6 buttons to be like a real guitar, not including many guitar tricks that can be done on a real one.
The best idea out of this is to have a Guitar Hero on the run. Imagine holding a bulky guitar while trying to look at the DS screen? I'm pretty sure Activision had tried to make the accessory like a guitar, but it's just too hard to implement I guess.
This is a game, so let's just have fun playing it!

Obviously, instead of an accessory that plugs into your DS, they should have a guitar that the DS would plug into! Although, that might make it hard to easily look at the screen, so maybe an adaptor that lets you plug a USB Guitar Hero II controller into the GBA slot. The homebrew community would love that!

My only concern is that the original ds users will be screwed.
