Yet, we have found hope through a flickr photostream. One soul, who describes this ambitious project as their "first time to paint such a demanding job," really managed to set the bar for first attempts. Just looking at this thing, we can hardly believe that this person has never taken apart and painted a DS before. It's quality.
Does this give you a yearning to try and paint your own DS? Still too scared to give it a go?
[Thanks, Jesus!]

I had a pink DS phat and I decorated it with black felt tip.
Thunder strikes were everywhere.
Because pink and black go together.

I'm too horrified at the thought of voiding my warranty. I live in perpetual fear that something might happen to my 'first born child' (My DS is my first born, iPod my 2nd, my Logitech G15 Gaming keyboard is my 3rd).

If I could buy paints here (spray paint is outlawed in Chicago, for some silly reason) I'd totally get my customization on. That metallic blue is slick, but it'd be even better with some stencilly goodness.

I'm waiting until mid-April to mod my DSL, when the warranty expires. I'll probably do something similar to the mod you guys showed in this post. That metallic blue is definitely sexy.

Nope, still doesn't give me any such yearning. If I tried something like that, I would be in the market for a new DS. I rather however, get the folks at colorware to give it some customs colors or buys some skins from decalgirl.com.

I am pretty creative, but only moderately mechanically inclined. I have never tried anything like this myself, but the detailed instructions online could probably get me through a project like this.
I think I'll wait until DS is old and then risk it (especially if the newer handheld is backward compatible). That way I'm not risking too much.
Or maybe I could use my PS2 as a guinea pig.
