Each month, the EGM rumor mill churns out some very interesting topics of conversation. Well, the latest rumor that will be on the minds of all Nintendo-faithful is Disney's supposed intention to take on Nintendo's platforming plumber with their strongest mascot, Mickey. Most of us probably played Mickey's Illusion games back on Sega's systems, so we recall that Mickey can be in a good game (some of you probably count those Kingdom Hearts games, as well?). But, does he have what it takes to compete with Mario? Perhaps, with Warren Spector supposedly heading up the project.
It seems silly that anyone would try to compete with Mario, but hey, that's just us. What do you all think?

Do not understand the power of Disney. They can destroy Mario even if it means planting subliminal messages into the Disney Channel and future Hannah Montana DS games.
Although, I think Mickey isn't the most popular character in the young demographic where it really counts anymore. Out of many recent Disney games (Hannah Montana, High School Musical, etc.) I do not recall any featuring the classic cartoon characters. Maybe they would use a different headlining character besides Mickey Mouse.

Keep in mind Square Enix had a fair bit of say in Kingdom Hearts too. If Disney got it all their way, I'm sure it would have turned out not so good.

Castle of Illusion was one of my favourite games growing up.
It was miles better than Super Mario World.

I see no reason why they couldn't develop a platformer that rivals New Super Mario Bros. It's not like NSMB was the end-all for platformers. It was just a damned fine one. I can't remember the last time I've seen Mickey Mouse, is he still popular?

I absolutely LOVE KH games, but Mickey is a bit strange in it.. being king and all. Brings the Disney magic to it i suppose.
I also remember playing the Illusion games on megadrive and SNES, which i was really interested in and thought were good..
interesting to see what they'll come out with.

Sure they can, depends on who they outsource the characters to! Capcom had a LEGENDARY NES run, that I wonder will ever it come to VC. Not to mention the popular as ever Square-Enix though I think people like the Original Characters from KH more than Mickey and his court (even with the little kids).

Well, there was this famous poll of popular characters that kids knew a long time back that was frequently cited as an example of mario's popularity.
The big kicker was that Mario was more well known than Mickey Mouse, which shocked many.
So clearly, with no other big names mentioned, then Mickey's only competition in the Mascot world is Mario. Or Kermit the Frog.
Noticeably, Mario's opponents are always Anthropomorphic animals. Always.

If all the other mascots are anthropomorphic, or in Master Chief's case in a mech suit, then that just shows how much staying power Mario the human plumber has.
