DS Daily: Walkthroughs

We like being challenged by games, but sometimes if we're stuck in a particular spot for too long, we can get really frustrated. Then we have the inevitable, "Should I check a walkthrough?" debate, although our weak-willed selves will try to resist as long as possible.

What do you think about walkthroughs, though, and how often do you use them? Only when you're really stuck? Always, to make sure you get every item possible? Or, maybe even never, no matter how long you've been unable to progress?

if i like the game enough, and i'm stuck. I'll use a walkthrough but only for that particular section.

I use them when I get really stuck. It happens more in games like Phoenix Wright. I remember one part where there were like 13 statements you could press, but if you pressed any but the correct one, you failed the case. xP

Same thing happened to me! I just save my place, and turn it off if it was not the right statement to press. Anyway, I think you aren't really playing the game if you have walkthrough next to you, and doing what it says. However, in cases were you are really stuck, it's just help. The only game I really use a guide for is Twilight Princess.

Same with Roto13, I also check hints for Phoenix Wright when I get stuck with a witness account.

I think the satisfaction derives from walking through the game by oneself. however, since you're playing in order to have fun, and being stuck isn't any fun at all...but the main reason i really enjoy gamefaqs is because of all the background they post there. one can really get even the last inch out of a game with gamefaqs, which you couldn't without (translations of the japanese manga panels in ouendan 2...).

I use them sometimes...
to check if I'm overviewing something (checking places I've already passed to avoid wasting 10 hours searching all the place for some item) to check some tricks when replaying a game, to find some itens when heading for a 100% in a game and can't figure out the easier way to get something...

It's kind of rare to get stuck and feel like getting the answer on a walkthrough... it's gotta be a really bad game to leave you in that situation and feeling like cheating.

or your brain could be on the fritz and you can't figure out a certain puzzle because your thinking way to hard and when you look it up and figure it out you feel really stupid not getting it in the first place :)

I generally only use walkthroughs for when I'm stuck, but I think its justified to use them for games that have a lot of content that could be easily missed, like rpgs.

my first brush with a walk through guide was when i was playing Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest on the NES when i was like 9 ears old but, if you have played the game then you know what i'm talking about.

Till today i only use a Walk through or Strategy Guide if I'm really stuck on a level. However, if it a completion game then after i finish it once on normal and hard i then use the walk through to get everything the game has hidden. (Zelda, Metroid, Golden Sun)

Same with others, Phoenix Wright needs a walkthrough to play and enjoy. But on other side this just shows that many cases are filled with B.S. I honestly stopped playing JfA jsut because many cases were plain crap. Be any logic in the cases - then there would be no problem playing, no need for WTs.

But that's probably exception. On DS I have no games which required WTs. I used WT with Luminous Arc - on replay - just to add some more action to the play and see how far make it sense to develop party. But that's about it.

Generally, WTs I think are important. Try e.g. playing anything of Zelda or Metroid w/o them. If you playing first time the N's game - didn't played all 20 previous revisions - you would be getting stuck on every other corner. Many games are just "traditional" to their "genre" - making them incomprehensible to anybody playing first time. WTs are must.

On other side, I like games which do not demand you to guess what to do now. Unfortunately consoles are filled with such "and-now-duck" type of games, where you die easily (and traditionally in console games you die often and die easily) if you can't guessed that (and what) game will do next to you. I'd say, consoles needs WTs more than PC games.

There's nothing wrong with checking a walkthrough, if it saves you from wasting hours pointlessly. I like having a life outside of games, even though games are still basically my life. Don't feel guilty, people! (unless you bought the guide)

Time wasting is a huge reason why I read guides. Honestly, I don't even think buying a guide is a negative thing. There are several times while playing that I find myself lost (rpgs) or looking for secrets and get stuck, why not use a guide?

Hell, I used Nintendo Power's guides my entire childhood.

Also, as far as collectability, older rpg guides are sometimes worth more than the game itself.

Ha, I'd never feel guilty for checking a guide. My patience has actually started to diminish. I used to be a-ok with spending an hour walking around in circles looking for some place to go, not anymore!

I like using walkthroughs. I don't sit and play with a walkthrough in front of me, but if I'm stuck I'l;l use one. if a game is frustrating enough for me to feel like I need one in front of me all the time, i stop playing it and move on to something more entertaining.

Am I the only person here who refuses to use a guide for the Ace Attorney series? XD
Ok, so I used a fair few soft resets, but I never once resorted to using a walkthrough.

I do like to read walkthroughs for games, however, even if I'm not stuck on it - just sort of idly curious, usually about secrets and such. I even do it with games I've completed already. Most of my walkthrough uses come with RPGs, actually - some puzzles (especially the sliding kind) really get me more irritated than anything.

That said, the only DS games (I think) I've had to sit with a walkthrough beside me were Jump Super/Ultimate Stars. Because I can't read Japanese.

i usually use them when i get to those WTF??!! parts of games. i can only handle doing the same thing over and over and failing for so long. i also use them for games that i'm playing through for the second or third (or more) time to get all the secrets or items or whatnot. like i've been using it for FFVI, just because i've played it so many times and i want to get all the best items and max out all my characters, just because.

I like to beat games the hard way, then when I feel it's abou to end, I google around to find any secrets I might have missed. I may also use 'em for when I get stuck beyond frustration. Otherwise I avoid walkthroughs for fear of spoilers.
