If you like the track list for the game, that's all well and good, but such things can't ever suit everyone's tastes. That got us to wondering, though, how important track lists are when it comes to purchasing rhythm games. Would you turn down the next Guitar Hero or Rock Band just because the songs weren't up to par, even if you love the gameplay? Or does gameplay trump even the most annoying of tunes? Also, do standards differ for games like EBA and Ouendan?

It really depends on how much the track list sucks.
if its really bad, i can't play the game.
but i can bare a few pop hits or something like that..

I think EBA can get away with having a poor tracklist because the gameplay is by far the star of the show, whilst GH cannot so much, because take away the good songs and you're pressing buttons in time with visual indications and that's about it.
Also, Lefty power!

I like Spiderwebs, Breed and All-Star (I said it, Okay?). Hit me with your best shot is okay, and Rock and Roll All Nite will be a bad cover. Still, I can take GH with me! And there are 10 more songs to be revealed! Have faith!

I like Nirvana as much as the next guy (or girl, in this case). And I also like the songs "Spiderwebs" and "All-Star" -- when I was younger, I actually owned both of those CDs.
But those two songs don't really work on a game like Guitar Hero for me. They're much too poppy. Add that to all the modern pop songs that I hate (like Maroon 5) and the whole track list seems really weak to me. I also really, really dislike the song "Jessie's Girl" (though I think I may be the only person in the world to hate it).
Based on how poppy this list is, I don't have much faith in the other ten tracks that will be revealed. But, to each his own :).

I hate "Jesse's Girl", too. Blech.

I'm interested in actual game. Having a good tracklist it just a plus for me. For a Japanese rhythm game, I don't really mind what song they put in it since I'm open to most Japanese songs anyway. And I'm sure they really picked the best or the popular songs in their games.
As for English rhythm games, I'm a bit picky with the songs but somehow some songs just grow on me like the songs in GH2 and 3. But EBA still hasn't grown on me yet. I still prefer Ouendan with the nice snares and whistles. EBA sounds so plain to me.

I find, in the case of Guitar Hero at least, that the tracklists have declined in "showstopper" quality over the series... compare "Ziggy Stardust" to "Kool Thing", perhaps, to see what I mean. But really, I don't mind some of the "bad" tracks (lots of the GH3 bonus songs in particular) if they're as challenging and fun to rattle off as my favourite tracks. It's funny, having played EBA and being absolutely floored by the fun rhythm mechanics, I could barely stand to continue on after having to do some songs, "Skater Boi", "Material Girl", that horrible one with the christmas storylne, etc...

All of those songs lick a caribou's ass and make me wish they'd implement a way to upload your own songs to the game.
I tend to stay away from rhythm/music games because the songs are always if not mostly shitty.

Usually if I'm familiar with the song at all, whether I like it or not, that's good enough for me. And if I'm not I probably will be by the time I manage to score well on it.

EBA had style. It got a free pass on the weaker tracks.
Where's my EBA2 with original tracks, anyway?

In the case of Elite Beat Agents, I have to admit that I wasn't exactly jumping for joy over the track list, but there were some songs/artists that I initially liked to begin with (David Bowie's Let's Dance, Chicago's You're The Inspiration, among a few others). And then I had a few surprises with the likes of Earth Wind & Fire's September.
I can only think of a few songs that I just did not like at all, that EBA did not help me with, but even then, I was able to tolerate them. I think one benefit the game had was the fairly wide variety in it's soundtrack, in terms of genres and decades. Since EBA wasn't really a genre specific title, in regards to its music.
In the case of Guitar Hero: On Tour, I don't like the majority of the track list as it stands, let alone having the likes of Daughtry and Maroon 5 being in a 'rock' game. And then as for the rest, I just don't feel it. Since the Guitar Hero franchise has always been about living out a rock n' roll fantasy...I can't imagine doing it to Los Lonely Boys' Heaven.
So yes, I do think the standards are different, depending on what kind of game it is. Or rather, what kind of general style the game is trying to achieve with its music-focused gameplay.

The tracklist is the reason I own a copy of Oendan rather than EBA.

I like All Star, but I don't think it's really suited to the gameplay of Guitar Hero. Frankly, though, as long as there's no Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, N*SYNC, Hilary Duff, or Hannah Montana, I'll be happy.
I'm more picky in less engaging games, such as DDR or Donkey Konga. I'm still pissed that Donkey Konga 2's North American release only allows Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye to be seriously played in challenge mode, as it's far and away the best song in the game.

helicopter and breed, sure. but the rest of it is pretty eh. they should use some songs with a bit more 'timeless' appeal rather than outdated shallow chart hits like all-star and all the small things. i don't see what they're going for with stuff like that. those of us who were teens when they were out are over that rubbish, and i can't imagine todays teens care? it's sort of not aiming at anyone.
and EBA was terrible. i have no doubts that i would have enjoyed that game more if the music didn't grate.

Yea the tracklist is very important to me.
I love alot of different types of Rock, from Industrial to Classic and almost everything in between, so I've been pretty pleased with the tracklists on all of these rock games. Guitar Hero: On Tour is definatly sub-par though, theres a track or two I like but then theres Maroon 5, lol.
I hear most of the rest of On Tour's tracklist is coming from the main 3 Guitar Hero games so that definatly leaves some hope.
I'd also play DDR if they had better taste in electronic music.

I think the track list looks awesome. If you don't like the songs, then don't buy it. Problem solved.

SO important. I wouldn't bother with Guitar Hero or Rock Band if there weren't at least a few songs I liked. I only gave EBA a try because I'd heard such great things about it here, and it was like $15 at Wal-Mart, but I'm glad I did!
