The question was "What's your favorite Nintendo handheld," not headheld.
DS FTW, though Micro is a close second for me

Not sure on favorite, but Gameboy Color was my least favorite, only because when it came out you had two color choices: purple or more purple.

My favourite is the Game Boy Colour (in see-through purple), because it was my first Game Boy, the one I grew up with. My favourite Game Boy/Colour games were Pokemon Red/Gold, Wario Land II and Zelda: Link's Awakening.
My second favourite is the Game Boy Micro, because it is the first Nintendo handheld which I could put in my pocket without looking like I have a cancerous growth on my thigh, and it is the best machine for playing GBA games. My favourite GBA games are Wario Ware, Pokemon Fire Red/Emerald, Metroid Fusion/Zero Mission, Advance Wars II, Zelda Link to the Past/Minish Cap, F-Zero: GP Legend, and the Mario Advance Series.
My third favourite is the DS Lite, because of the innovation it brought to handheld gaming, and the large number of excellent games. My favourite DS games are Pokemon Diamond, Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Tetris, Metroid Prime: Hunters and Animal Crossing.

The GBA SP. Fun games, great system.
The DS Lite gets edged out because while I like the games, the durability of the system kinda leaves a bit to be desired. My old Gameboy brick still runs even now, but I don't have the same amount of faith in the DS Lite.

It has to be the DS because of the amazing library the DS has, plus the ability to play the huge great library of the GBA games as well. Sure fire winner on passing the time :D

The one that truly enthralled me, the one that won me back to gaming after years away, was the GBA SP. the DS definitely builds on the appealing clamshell design, and my DS lite is the one I do all my gaming on these days, but i wouldn't be gaming at all if it wasn't for the SP (NES Edition for the win!)

It's gotta be the Gameboy Color. My first Nintendo Handheld. At the time it was revolutionary, a portable gaming system with a color screen and a twice as fast processor as the predeccessor. The Nintendo DS is great but it just was not as large of a step forward as the Gameboy Color was. Sure start talking about the touch screen and how great it is but the Gameboy Color was when the mobile platform really took off.
The Nintendo DS is nothing compared to such greats now such as the iPhone. The iPhone has a bigger touch screen, higher resolution screen, more ram, faster processor, an accelerometer (motion control), a smaller system, and cheaper games delivered through the revolutionary App Store coming out on June 27th. The resolution is better than even the PSP which is great also. Don't call me a fanboy of any company, I have a Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, iPhone, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii (which is only really good for Nintendo Games).
I love my iPhone and loved my Gameboy Color when I had it.

No disrespect, but isn't it a bit early to call the iPhone a great gaming system? I mean, you mention the app store, and you mention that's not out until June 27nd, and I'm a bit confused on how a person can point at something not out yet and gush about the experience being awesome. Cart before horse, and all that.

@red
Just wait you will find out how awesome it will be. The videos look great and the demos shown look well worth the $10 price tag plus many will be free.
$20-30 or $0-10 which do you think is a better deal for a full featured game

My favorite is the DS Lite, because it's what I have now and it can play the most games. My first handheld was the original GameBoy (yeah, I'm old), but I suppose my second favorite would have to be the GBA SP. That's the first one that was backlit, right?

Hmm, I've owned all the Gameboys except Pocket throughout the years, and I find it very hard to pick a favorite. All had their problems, but I liked them all. I really like my micro, as it's the only one that comfortably fits in my pocket.

Definitely my black Gameboy Pocket. I just love almost everything about it.
My least favorite is probably the GBA SP. I just never liked the shape of it.

I started with Game Boy Color (bundled with PKMN Yellow), then went on to an Indigo Game Boy Advance (mostly played Golden Sun, along with some Deesaster Strikes, which is damn impossible to finish). Still have it, though the screen's cracked from backpackage, which led to my next system.
The SP (or as I've dubbed mine, SPee(s)) is the one I've had the most of, though. My first was an NES Edition, which I left along with my friend's copy (I think) of FFI&II in the common room of my res. hall; went back for 'em, never saw 'em again. Pity. [Oh, and I'd sent it to Nintendo a couple times to get dust out of the screen; jeebus... Luckily, even though my warranty was out, not sure how long, the guy kept it free to ship since he overlooked asking me before saying so.] My next, dubbed Spee II (pronounced "SPee Dos"), was one of the backlit Graphite ones. Damn, the only thing it lacked was the ability to just turn the screen off. Its shoulder(s) started acting up, though (had trouble stocking/shuffling in KHCOM), so I sent it to Nintendo. I got a different system back, since the Element sticker I'd been putting on them was gone and the barcode label had another on top of it (made for something to rub my finger(s) against). This one was dubbed SPee 3 PO (the "PO" being for "Pissed Off", since the sticker and the minute ownership writings I put on the inner rim of the battery holder were now for naught). Still haven't done much toward customization, but I've been bouncing around the idea of having my insignia engraved somewhere.
Now, for micro and DS lite... I'd actually be interested in a micro, since the smaller screen makes for higher resultion, and WarioWare would fit it even better. I got my little sister a DS lite (back before there were color options), but the screen seems to act up (at least for Touched!) and the D-pad isn't very secure-feeling, so I'm halfway hoping that they introduce a new one come E3.

The DS is the best.
The GameBoy Color is the worst (10 years of the good ol' GB to make this lame machine with almost no extra power, hardware wise it's a failure, the NGPC and Wonderswan were much better and used less battery).

The GBC had twice the power and a color screen over its predecessor the gameboy pocket. Just saying.
