For me, Ages of Empires DS was the hardest. Maybe it's because I couldn't put the time into that it required, but I never quite got the hang of it.

the first Etrian Odyssey.. though with all the votes going for Contra 4, I may have to try that one out and see. I guess with Contra 4 there's no option of grinding to get stronger before you progress.
