By now, you've probably watched the Chrono Trigger trailer (and, if not, go see it). This morning, we wanted to ask how you felt about what looks like a straight port -- at least, as far as the graphics are concerned. We know the DS version will add new functionality, but if this trailer tells the full graphical story, it's the same ol' Chrono Trigger. Is this what you wanted?

I'm still in the vast minority of people underwhelmed by the announcement.
If it was a 3d remake like FF4 then I'd be happier. As it is, I still have my SNES and my SNES cart, and in the near-15-years since it came out, I haven't really had any huge urge to replay it -- so yeah, I'm in the minority of people who couldn't care less. :(

Same here, expect I never really liked the game to begin with (I only played it last year).
A true remake, with a new script and everything might have been worth it, but not a straight port.

Yes. I wanted both. I don't mind if it's a direct port or only has minimal additions. I like the art style of the original. A new update could also be good but I don't want it more.

's coo'. Never played CT when it got packaged for the SNES or PS1, and I haven't gotten too far into the retranslation patch, so since there are the most recent English releases of the game, a straight-up port with new functionality is basically a spiffier Finest FANTASY for ADVANCE deal, a mid-point between those ports and their revamped 3D counterparts. Who knows, maybe in a couple or so years they'll take CROSS to the PSP with a 3D'd TRIGGER bundled. Connectivity would ensue (along with seperate releases, I'd imagine; like bundling will ever happen again, pfft).

Oh, and WHAT'S WITH SQUARE'S CHARACTERS AND HOLDING SWORDS SIDEWAYS?! It's kinda bugging me...

I'm actually not sold that just because a game is a 3D remake it'll be better. In the case of Chrono Trigger I'm quite glad its staying true to form.

Then why do a remake? Why not pull the old one out if it's not going to have a graphical overhaul? Considering the benefit of a touch screen in remakes is mostly easier menu systems usage at best, then what's the point?

I don't really mind. I would have been the same degree of excited had we been told it was going to be a 3D remake. I do think that keeping it as is will ensure the longevity of the art style. Who knows what it would have looked like in 3D. When images of a FF3/FF4 DS remake of CT flash in my head, it doesn't look too good. It really would have hurt the game, I think.
So bottom line, I'm happy with it staying 2D. Now if they could just tell us if the anime cutscenes are going to be included and how the touch screen will be utilized, then I can begin to sleep soundly.

I'd rather spend $30 on a DS version than $80 on a SNES version.

I second this motion.
(Plus however much an SNES costs, which appears to be around 40$ at a cursory glance at eBay.....)

I'm glad it's retaining its 2D look. As an art form, 2D is enjoying a bit of a resurgence and I'm glad to see Chrono Trigger participating in the resurgence.

I'm good with it, as "the same ol' Chrono Trigger" is the one we love. I now wonder though what it would look like as a remake...

A 3d remake would be cool and all but I'm glad it's staying the way it is. I'm curious about the additional functionality though, I wonder if it will feel "slapped on."

I was expecting Chrono Trigger updated just like the dragon Quests were. But a straight port is also great. If it comes with the animations of ths psx version, the multiplayer and the other gimmicks its going to be great. Square will probably sell it on full price though... if it is a port, it should be sold cheaper.

I never played Chrono Trigger, so to me it looks pretty "meh". If that trailer is truly a representation of what the game will look like, then when I'm faced with the decision of Chrono Trigger or something like the new Sonic RPG, Chrono Trigger is going to lose.
I see a lot of folks waxing nostalgic in this post, talking about the 2D art style, etc. I can appreciate that, but if you like the idea of this remake getting out among the masses, then I think this is a poor direction. Maybe it's just fan service to the original fans, though.

The 2D Style really does the game good justice, it's art direction is incredible. Honestly don't let the graphics put you off, Chrono Trigger is easily one of the best (console) RPG's ever made.

I can understand that. There's some Project Exile game which has screens which are full of retro flare, and people are gushing about that while I'm left figuring that I'd rather get Sonic. I'm sure you're right about some element of fanservice. I mean, slap SNES sprites on a game and you've got a built-in fanbase who'll automatically gush about how awesome the game is, how wonderful the art direction is, and they'll just ignore the script and actual gameplay.
For me, I'm like a number of other people: I just want a copy of Chrono Trigger that isn't of dubious legality, plagued by slowdowns and loadtimes which are really noticeable, or go for a lot on ebay. As a general rule, I dislike buying copies of the same game, but the PSX version really did suck. But that's just me.

I agree with you, Gennataos.
I've actually played the original, and while it looked nicer than other SNES games and I appreciated that, it's really not going to turn any heads on the DS today and people shouldn't be buying it on its art alone.
People who've never played the game should definitely look up more info about it to decide if it's worth their time. If someone's making a choice between Chrono Trigger and FF3, though, I'd definitely go with Chrono Trigger (great 2D graphics and a lively story beat "meh" 3D graphics and a predictably bland FF plot any day).
And to answer the question in the post: I personally would've preferred a reimagining of the game made especially for the DS, not just a direct port. Even though I didn't enjoy FF3 DS that much, it was still cool that they did that. There's a difference between keeping the art style alive and just milking an old game.

in reply to what Red wrote, I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I never owned the SNES version of the game, but the PS1 port was disappointing simply because of those awful load times. I mean, WHY??? But the fact that this will be a portable copy makes it that much more awesome.
On another note, I think many of the people hoping that Sonic Chronicles will be Sonic's savior game or about as good / better than SMRPG may be disappointed. It just looks mediocre to me.
