But not everyone is so lucky. Recent adopters, or those who had a DS, but only discovered the handheld's depth of late, are faced with shelves and shelves of games from which to choose. Some things are easy picks: Link and Mario rarely make bad choices for the Nintendo fan. But there's so much else out there. One reader e-mailed us asking for help in choosing from that vast selection, and we're turning that request over to you. Beyond the obvious -- like Mario Kart, Pokémon, and Phantom Hourglass, if you had to name three excellent DS games, what would you choose? We'll throw out three as well: The World Ends With You, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, and Contra 4.

1. Mario Kart DS ... Oops eliminated per Alisha (unlocked the alternate game title screen and have 3 stars on all tracks, at all speeds, including mirror mode).
2. Pokemon Diamond & Pokemon Pearl ... Nooooo, eliminated by Alisha again (there goes 600 + hours of gameplay).
Okay, let's see ...
1. Clubhouse Games - the only game I play on Nintendo Wifi, other Wifi games has too many Action Replay cheaters.
2. Zookeeper (European version) - European version eliminated the sleep mode bug. Addicting Bejeweled clone. :)
3. Touch Detective - This game made me laugh the most. The puzzles (needed to solve the cases) are challenging, if you CAREFULLY read the dialog and talk to everyone, the clues will take you to their logical conclusion. Of course, if you are speeding through the dialog to finish the game for a review (Gamespot, IGN, etc.), then you will NOT figure out the puzzles w/o help.
My three jewels out of many great games for the DS.
Peace.

At this point in time I've only been playing TWEWY and Rhythm Tengoku Gold lately. I'll add Ouendan 2 to that to make my 3.

Man, after reading over everyone's responces, I'm not sure anymore. Ouendan was just the first thing that entered my mind, but now I'm thinking of Phoenix Wright, Sonic Rush, Soul Bubbles, New Mario, Feel the Magic... yikes.

This is difficult because of the variety of awesome games for the system. Focusing on sampling that variety, I would add to the "givens," the following:
1 - Clubhouse Games
2 - EBA
3 - Advance Wars DoR

three from 3 completely different genres
-Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! (dunno, for me its soooo much better than elite beat... off course for many of you it's an import... I'm a Brazilian.. everything is an import to me, so... it doesn't matter)
-Phoenix Wright (or Hotel Dusk Room 215, they're the same lvl to me)
- Bangai-O Spirits (u name it... puzzle, shooter, platform... its infinite all genres in one action)

1. Ace Attorney series
2. Tetris DS
3. Feel the Magic and Rub Rabbits
Although honorable mentions go to: Jump superstars, Bleach, Meteos, Trace Memory, and Lifesigns(sure, it could be better, but I could actually finish this one, unlike Trauma Center). And the Megaman ZX series and Castlevania of course.

Oy this is hard. @_@ Let's see....
1.) TWEWY
2.) Ouendan/ EBA
3.) Professor Layton and the Curious Village.
And seeing how I just can't name three, here's another three that'll work.
1.) Any Ace Attorney game (although it'll be better if u go in order)
2.) Animal Crossing - Most randomly addictive game EVER
3.)The Touch Detective series - This game is hilarious.

I would recommend:
[1] Pokemon: hours and hours of gameplay. It uses the same pokemon formula, but adds even more things and pokemon.
[2] Phoenix Wright/Apollo Justice:Capcom did a nice job on localizing these ones. The writing is great and the cases are intricate. Who knew that being a lawyer could be so much fun!
[3] Luminous Arc: Since no body mentioned it, I will. It's an SRPG and it isn't too difficult, it has VO (which are ok, but some of the characters don't sound too good though). The story isn't ground breaking, but it is still better then FFTA2's story (which really doesn't have one). It's a charming little game, but I would only recommend it if you like SRPGs.
these three are not my top picks, but three favourites of mine. I've tried to give different genres, but I must confess, I am a total RPG (strategy and action included) and adventure addict. ^^ Honorable mention goes to Sonic Rush, it's very much like a Genesis Sonic game, so if you liked those, it would be good to pick up.
