But not everyone is so lucky. Recent adopters, or those who had a DS, but only discovered the handheld's depth of late, are faced with shelves and shelves of games from which to choose. Some things are easy picks: Link and Mario rarely make bad choices for the Nintendo fan. But there's so much else out there. One reader e-mailed us asking for help in choosing from that vast selection, and we're turning that request over to you. Beyond the obvious -- like Mario Kart, Pokémon, and Phantom Hourglass, if you had to name three excellent DS games, what would you choose? We'll throw out three as well: The World Ends With You, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, and Contra 4.

It depends on your personal tastes.
The games EVERYONE mentions appeal to, er, everyone. But each person has specific tastes, but the great thing is that the DS can help you out no matter what you like.
Me? I'm an RPG nerd. So my top three would probably be Magical Starsign, Summon Night, and.....aw crap, I can't think of any other non-Pokemon JRPGs that don't suck off the top of my head. Rhapsody is coming in September. That has potential for awesome. Final Fantasy III and IV are great, but ports/re-releases/re-makes don't count. And if they do, put Chrono Trigger on that list right quick.
(TWEWY doesn't make the list because I haven't played it. And I won't play it because I find no pleasure in walking around a real city and buying trendy clothes in a game because I live near a bunch of expensive clothing shops in a trendy part of town, and it's just not fun. Ever. )
But if you hate RPGS, then my list means nothing to you.
Me? I hate rhythm and music games. Hate 'em. I play real musical instruments, so just counting beats just won't ever be fun to me. But that's just me. So....go play what you like. Who cares if it's "THE BEST"?

Hear hear! It's not just that there are so many DS games; it's that there are so many different kinds of games. To each his own.
Lately I've been playing nothing but Civilization Revolution; it's addictive, and it suits my taste. If I get tired of it, I'll probably go back to Age of Empires or Advance Wars: Dual Strike. (So, there are three titles--but all in just one genre.)
Those who prefer shooters, RPGs, puzzle games, or other kinds will no doubt have different top picks.
We need to compare apples to apples, so to me it only makes sense to pick a top three for each genre.

1) Etrian Odyssey! If you love extremely pull-your-hair-out-of-frustration RPG games, then this is for you! Plus, it's a trilogy, and the 2nd game is out as well.
2) Planet Puzzle League. Great game, even if you haven't ever played Tetris Attack or Pokemon Puzzle Challenge/League. Especially even better with stylus control.
3) Bangai-O Spirits. It's pretty cool...well, I like shooters myself, like R-Type, so this is up my alley, but whateva!

In addition to what was mentioned in the post (I also enjoy TWEWY), lemme put in two cents for
Geometry Wars Galaxies DS (pure arcade shooter entertainment.)
FFTA2 (Because I love me some FFTA)
and Starfox Command. (WiFi multiplayer here rocks)

Honestly, I don't need any games other than TWEWY ;) My love for that game knows no bounds. Though I would pick Pokemon Diamond, too.

Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer, Geometry Wars Galaxies, and Elite Beat Agents. (There are many others, but those are the three that come to mind right now. Clubhouse Games would probably be on the list if it weren't for my forced separation from that game....)

2. Digimon World Dawn/Dusk - Great traditional battle system 380+ obtainable party members, and great sprite art.
