From what I've seen, the game looks fantastic. I've been secretly wishing for a spiritual successor to Dragon Power on the original NES since my childhood days and this may fit the bill.
Also remember that the game is based on Dragon Ball, NOT Dragon Ball Z. The original series is more light-hearted and doesn't take itself as seriously.
I look forward to playing this when it comes to the US. I just wish I didn't have to wait until November 11...

The original series was more about the adventure aspects of just running around and finding the dragon balls in a world full of demons, Red Ribbon Soldiers, namekians, and rival martial artists with strange powers
The latter series was about multiple people with gargantuan muscles screaming at each other and blowing stuff up, while GT tried to combine the two elements
All three series were awesome, though.

I hope this game is good. The original Dragonball was an awesome show/manga and to see a good game of it on the DS would be a wish only granted by a huge-ass dragon. ^_^
That being said, Jump Ultimate Stars is a good game and it's based on several licensed properties.

Not on DS from what I remember, but, although I dislike Simpsons, I liked Simpsons Game for PS2.

Can't believe Astro Boy for GBA hasn't been mentioned yet.
...Y'know, I don't think I've played any other licensed games.

I've actually never played a licensed game because of word that it has good gameplay, but I wouldn't be opposed to it. The magic of licensed games are that they don't have to put quite as much effort into the game as a developer would with an AAA third-party title and still not disappoint most purchasers, because familiarity with the material can make up for more unimaginative elements of the game (not bad gameplay, of course, but secondary elements that lend a touch of extra finesse to a game like a good plot or score, varied level design, creative mechanics, etc.)
Being a huge DB/DBZ fan, though, I feel like I'm getting the best of both worlds with Origins. I've actually never played Phantom Hourglass because I was so resistant to the thought of stylus-control in a Zelda game, but I have no preconceived notions of how a Dragonball adventure game should play, so, strangely, I remain interested because of some of the gameplay features that turned me off to PH. Does it help that I'll be playing as characters that I have a longstanding fan connection to? Yes, but it remains a secondary motivation for purchasing the game.

Normally, I would be put off from a Dragon ball related game, this one seems different, its based on the first dragon ball series. Meaning, it actually has a story. That was the problem with dragon ball z, why they really couldn't make anything aside from a fighter. DBZ had no real "story", it basically just build tension until the battle, with scenes of the characters doing training. The only exception to this was during the freeza saga. Which they actually did make an snes rpg on that. "I did like the series, like all children of the 90s did."
Dragon Ball on the other hand, actually had plot, character development, and best of all, the characters could actually be challenged by events put in front of them, such as, a really tall mountain, or an army full of robots. While in DBZ, when you can fly around the world in a matter of seconds, like superman, and blow up a planet with little effort, the only thing that can really stop you is something like doomsday and Darkseid.
It also looks pretty good, compared to other, earlier ds games. So, I hope this comes out here soon.

I knew nothing about Cadiallacs & Dinosaurs, Jojo's Bizzare Adventure or Asro Boy when I played them, and all of them were fun.
Licensed games in the 8, 16 and early 32bit days, developed by Japanese companies, were among the best stuff consoles had to offer. I played plenty of those without even knowing that they were based on a license.
I guess nobody incuding myself is into huge lists, but let me just give a few examples: All Disney games by Capcom (SNES, NES,GB), Konami's various cartoon games (NES,GB,GEN/MD,SNES), SEGA's Disney games (GG,MS,GEN/MD)
Also, Anime based games were generally better, e.g. Magical Taruruto-kun games and Decap Attack (an offical hack of a Sindbad or so based anime game)
Oh and now completely on topic:
I guess I could enjoy the Dragon Ball game too, despite my lack of interest for the series.

No. . . I would not play a game based on source material I hated. Even if the gameplay rocked I would not play a Naruto game for example.
I did play this one GBA game that I did not know at the time was based on an anime. I just wanted a TRPG and this game (something tournament tactics) was sitting in a bargain bin so I got it. I found out later it was based on an anime but I never went out and saw the anime.

When I was a kid, I thoroughly enjoyed Total Recall on NES for hours. It's insanely more challenging than most platformers and feels pretty rewarding to beat it.
It wasn't until years later that I found out how much intense hate is out there for that damn game. Worst game ever?...I still don't get it.

Does Sonic Chronicles count? I'm no fan of the Sonic characters or world but this game is looking pretty promising, especially with BioWare developing it.

I really enjoy Bleach for the DS, despite not having really gotten into it prior.(although I am enjoying it in SJ now that it is in there regularly.)
Enjoyed Jojo for Dreamcast despite not reading the comics.

Not a game I played, but a game I WANTED to play was Record of Lodoss War on Dreamcast.
I did play and love its spiritual successors (Shining Force Neo @ EXA), at least.

I'm really into PoPoLoCrois, which is based on an anime series that I've never heard of.
And Sonic Chronicles. I'm not a huge Sonic fan, but it just sounds awesome.
I've played a bunch of licensed games, though usually I do it by accident, not knowing that it is, in fact, licensed. Usually I will put down a game if the box says "based on the hit animated show!" anywhere on it.

Goldeneye & astro boy are what come to mind when "good" "licensed" and "game" are mentioned in the same sentence.

I like Dragonball more than I like Dragonball Z. I used to watch the show on Toonami and I loved the humor and action.
The only good license game I can think of from the top of my head is Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3. It's the only license game that I own.
I used to play Aladdin for SNES. It was fun, but just a generic platformer by today's standards.

A bad license, but GREAT game, Spyro: The Eternal Night GBA.
This game looks very solid visually for a DS title. Hopefully, it will play as good as it looks.
