What did Santa leave under the tree? (update 1)

For those of you who, like us, are now done unwrapping the gifts and tallying up the final scores, we'd like to know what DS gifts have been bestowed upon you. Did you unwrap a new DS Lite, or perhaps got yourself a few games? Did you instead get those accessories you were looking for? Let us know in the comments!

What did we get? Well, plenty of clothes (growing up sucks) and some gift cards. With about $150 in cards to various retail outlets, we plan on getting ourselves some gaming goodies.

[Update: Whoops, we had Wii on the brain! We meant which DS-related gifts, not Wii.]

Phat mod: glowing skull

We're thinking this mod took some inspiration from a recently-released Microsoft game? Regardless of where it draws inspiration, it's one of the coolest mods we've seen for Nintendo's handheld. The process by which the mod is created is shown in a chronological retelling through many pictures. With the glowing skull being the end product, we think we wouldn't mind giving this a try on our DS Phat. As for trying it on a DS Lite, we don't think we've got the heart.

[Thanks Eric!]

Nostalgic homemade DS Lite case

In anticipation of receiving a pink DS Lite for Christmas, flickr user sakuramaki made this kickass DS Lite case. Modelled after the original NES controller, it was created by using cut pieces of plastic to shape the body, which had stitching affixed on top, and a pink polka dot lining for the inside. The case seals through the aid of a few strips of Velcro.

Personally, we love it and are fairly jealous. We have no excellent stitching ability (let alone the hand-eye coordination to use a pair of scissors), so attempting something of this nature is out of the question. Oh well, we're sure something like it will be available for purchase soon, if not already. Although, we must admit that we pretty much love our existing case ...

Found a cool homemade case online, or created one yourself? Found a cool case that wasn't homemade? We want to hear about it!

Japanese hardware sales, 11 Dec - 17 Dec: ARG edition [update 2]

I Love...Nintendo Wii Fanboy?
Update 2: Congratulations to Kurifurisan, Mr. Scolex, Oro, and Jennifer for successfully completing the ARG! The clues are explained below.

Clue 1: As you can see below, the word Wii and the numbers 10 and 29 are highlighted in bold. This obviously refers to the Wii Fanboy blog in particular, on the date October 29th. Only one article was published on this date: Toys R' Us nonsense.

Clue 2: In this post, we can immediately see that the post picture has been altered. It features four DS games: Spyro: A New Beginning, Contact, and Nintendogs (presumably the newer Dalmatian Edition). These games were all released on the same week, and thus, should have led you to the DS Fanboy post DS Releases for the Week of October 16th.

Clue 3: This post had an extra final line added: "4 leaves take 5 4 good, 6 feet under. A shame, really." Silly numbers games aside, the death and departure of four leaves refers to the untimely dissolution of Clover Studios, makers of such fine games as Viewtiful Joe and Okami. This should have referred you to the final destination post, Clover Studios Goes Six Feet Under on Nintendo Wii Fanboy. If you found the cross-linked post on DS Fanboy, there was a message saying you had the wrong blog.

We hope you enjoyed the game, and if you failed to complete it, you'll have some chances next year to prove your mettle. If you gain any, that is. Hah!

For the uninformed, ARG stands for "Alternate Reality Gaming". That's really just a silly hype-word, we think, but here we go. Your task: follow the sequence of clues to various past posts in both Nintendo Wii Fanboy and DS Fanboy. Should you manage to defeat our ingenious riddles, post a comment on the final post to declare your victory to the world. Heck, we'll even go back and give you a star for doing it, too ... the feature is temporarily out of service, but our tech guys should have it back up and running soon.

Below are the sales figures for this week, and contained therein, the first clue.

- DS Lite: 319,708 10,078 (3.25%)
- Wii: 108,237 22,798 (26.68%)
- PS3: 70,942 20,771 (41.40%)
- PSP: 48,962 20,032 (69.24%)
- PS2: 37,730 7,270 (23.87%)
- Xbox 360: 17,168 18,175 (51.42%)
- GBA SP: 1,86729 (1.53%)
- Game Boy Micro: 1,491 64 (4.12%)
- Gamecube: 1,152 583 (102.46%)
- DS Phat: 158 9 (5.39%)
- GBA: 42 25 (147.06%)
- Xbox: 3 3 (50.00%)

DS Fanboy poll: Where do you play?

We're in a poll mood today and were wondering where the majority of DS Fanboy readers like to play with their Nintendo handheld. Perhaps you are like us and play mostly in your own home, quietly sipping a cup of Early Grey as you scream at snaking bastards when playing Mario Kart DS over Wi-Fi. Or maybe you are a different breed, a rogue maverick who likes to game in the face of authority at the bus stop or at the library? Why not vote and let us know? If it's somewhere not included in the choices for the poll, leave a comment.

Where do you game?
I ride the train (or subway) a lot, so I play there
I play in the quiet comfort of my own home
On the bus, going to and from school
Only on Tuesday nights during Game Night with the DSF staff

Phoenix Wrong 4

It's amazing. Trust us.We don't know how we missed this one, folks. After we presented the original trilogy of Phoenix Wrong flash skits back in September, we promised ourselves we'd check every nineteen minutes for the impending fourth installment. Well, despite our best intentions, PW4 simply slipped by our drooping eyelids on November 22nd. Damn!

We'll make it up to you. Here's the link! Watch and be merry, o' future lawyers of America!

Mario is the downfall of our society

Uh-huh.That plumber may have ushered in the revival and rebirth of the modern video game industry, but everything isn't all sugarfairies and butterscotch. A retrospective study on this phenom reveals some startling truths about our favorite crimson-adorned pipe-jockey: a history of drug addiction, racism, and dealings with the seediest portions of the underworld. Destructoid has put together an eye-opening list of the egregious offenses this plumber has leveled against you, the gaming populace, and it's your responsibility to educate yourselves forthright.

Lost in Lost in Blue 2 screens

DS-x2 got a hold of some screens for the upcoming sequel to Lost in Blue. What's the most surprising about them is the confirmation that the game will take place on a desert island. We totally didn't see that coming! Now, we never played the first game, so we have no frame of reference on whether to be excited or disappointed at the idea of a sequel, but that's why we have you, fine reader!

Continue past the jump to catch the screens and leave a comment telling us how you feel about a Lost in Blue sequel. What did you love/hate about the first game?

DS Fanboy presents: Game Night (12/19/06)

We've tallied up the votes and our Game Night title has been chosen. We'll be meeting up in the same room as last week, at the same time. All of the details, including the results of the poll determining what game we'll be playing tonight, are after the break.

FF: CC screens show off single player and multiplayer screens

Famitsu published some screens and info via their website today. The screens (the top two are from single-player, with the bottom two providing a glimpse into the game's multiplayer) show some in-game sections of the title, but don't really reveal much. Aside from that, any online translation aid we've tried online has spit back indecipherable code. So, we're stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment in trying to gain any further information than the game stars twins.

Nintendo wants you to be an Elite Beat Agent

Looks like Nintendo loves seeing people make an ass out of themself dancing because, in celebration of Elite Beat Agents, they're holding a contest asking that you send in a video of yourself, along with two friends, dancing along to the theme of Elite Beat Agents. Sounds simple enough, right?

You might be asking yourself what exactly you'd win for dressing up and acting the fool on camera, and it turns out Nintendo thinks that 3 DS Lites (Polar, Coral and Onyx), 3 copies of Elite Beat Agents and 3 'Secret Agent Kits' including headphones and a t-shirt are about the right price.

So what do you guys think? Good enough prize to cause you to dress up and shake it on film?

The deluge of e-books continues

Now that the e-book floodgates are open, there's no stemming the tide. And thanks to the wonders of homebrew, we can move beyond sci fi and onto some heavy-hitting literary classics. One intrepid fellow named Brandon is working to format literature that is in the public domain for use with Moonshell, a homebrew media viewer/player for the DS, and his Moonbooks library already boasts works from Edgar Allen Poe, Thomas Malory, and Dante Alighieri.

The Moonbooks Project also features a heartfelt plea for Nintendo to develop their own plain text viewer, and to capitalize on the capabilities of the DS. We approve -- the DS is great for more than just games.

A DS case with feline features

Flickr user waffles2005 decided store bought cases weren't the appropriate flair for a DS, opting to create a carrying case from scratch. It doesn't stop there either, as waffles2005 made a game cartridge carrying sleeve, as well. Personally, we love seeing folks excited about their handhelds, mainly as it instills in us a feeling of companionship in our rabid obsession with Nintendo's dual-screen gaming system.

Chocobo and the magic launch event

Chocobo and the Magic Picture Book launched in Japan today and, in full-on Square-Enix fashion, was accompanied by an event in Shinjuku. Consumers were also greeted with this snazzy little pouch as a bonus gift upon purchasing the title. It's said that the final game features over 40 different mini-games and you can bet we will be getting our hands on it should it release stateside.

More pictures available after the jump ...

Moddin' it up: LED lights everywhere

Personally, we just can't get enough of the crazy DS mods the community keeps coming up with. This latest mod, which adds a ton of LED lights to the DS (as pictured above), is one of the better mods we've seen. Seeing as how when we catch a glimpse of a mod they're usually DS Phats, we're digging this DS Lite mod. We can understand not wanting to hack apart the already stylish DS Lite, though.

Got a modded DS? Seen a cool one in your travels across the internet? Let us know!
