DS gets VOIP homebrew

You can now get VOIP service on your DS via HelloDS. The platform is still in a very early iteration, but here's hoping it turns out nicely. From the official site:

"Q: What Is HelloDS?
A: HelloDS is a simple VoIP application for Nintendo DS, created by Alias-Zero It makes use of Stephen Stair's Wifi Lib
Q: Where Can I Get HelloDS?
A: The latest HelloDS builds are available from the download section, or on the forum where latest build information is posted.
Q: Can I have the source code?
A: I will release the source when I release the final version of HelloDS, no sooner no later. Sorry!
Q: Can I help you work on HelloDS?
A: Sorry it's kind of a project I'd like to work on alone, however you can offer me suggestions to improve HelloDS, see the forum section."

Python wraps around the DS

Okay, here's one for the techies among us. Wait, is that an acceptable and entirely politically correct term to use? Techies? I hope I'm not offending anybody, since I'm honestly not implying that your skull is filled with microchips and compressed binary libraries. Not that there's anything wrong with having your head filled with that kind of stuff. Please don't haxx0r me.

So, here's one for the technologically enthused among us: Python, that programming language of yore, can now be executed on the DS, thanks to some pioneering folks in the homebrew scene. What does that mean to you? Well, if you're an expert code wrangler, it means you can create some interesting new applications for the DS. If not, it means you can wait for someone to create interesting new applications, download them and show no appreciation whatsoever as you repeatedly complain about some new application you downloaded for your DS. It's a win-win situation!

Warning: The link leads to a page rife with technical jargon, hooplah, buzzwords, microcosms and several lines of code. Proceed at your own risk.

Homebrew RTS hits DS

Homebrew RTSFor those of you into the homebrew scene - and don't think we haven't seen you mulling about in those suspicious trenchcoats - here's an intriguing little RTS that an armchair dictator developed as a proof-of-concept. It clearly has a long way to go before competing with the likes of StarCraft, but at least it has the control method down. By tapping on an unsuspecting worker unit or dragging a box around a group of them, you can order them to perform menial and unfulfilling tasks that serve no reason other than to expand your empire of evil and oppression. If anything, this should get you excited for the forthcoming Age of Empires DS game.

If, however, you don't consider yourself a slave to capitalism (and good for you, by the way), it should get you excited about all the possibilities that can be found in the world of homebrew. This game isn't the only one that shows just how well the DS can handle real-time strategy games and first-person shooters, games that were mostly constricted to the PC until now. Now if only someone would conjure up a decent online instant messenger...

Development DS used on Mario & Luigi game

Alpha Dream development DSAlpha Dream, the developers of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time for the Nintendo DS used the pictured development DS before the real design was final. It looks like two GBA's with an SNES controller to interface. The game turned out okay, so we guess it worked out just fine.

Mario Kart DS beta courses

In addition to the online track hacks and other unlockables for Mario Kart DS that we've previously reported on, you can know uncover beta courses that were never released by Nintendo. A forum member writes: "There are several courses in Mario Kart DS that are unfinished and completely unavailable (beta). They can be played with a little bit of hacking, but not at all perfectly. The textures are missing, so the courses are displayed almost pure white."

Could lack of time be the reason for not including these tracks? Only Nintendo has the real answer, but it would have been nice to get some extra tracks on the game. Maybe some future solution will allow DS owners to do so though.

Nintendo DS port of Dragon's Lair

Dragons LairDragon's Lair is currently being ported/hacked for the Nintendo DS. You'll need to have your home brew skills up to par, so get hacking if you want the animation madness on your dual screen. From the article: "So far [porters] only have the first four levels complete and you'll need to use Neoflash in order for it to work on your DS, but the concept is fantastic and I'd definitely go to any length to get a portable version of Dragon's Lair."
