Show and Tell: One dedicated community

We've been talking a lot about Mother 3 recently, and for good reason: the fan community is one of the strongest around, and they function without even a scrap of official love. Still, they soldier on, translating games, and, even better for us in this space, they make things.

Of course, a fan translation is about the biggest DIY project we could feature here, but we've already done that. Instead, let's talk other things Mother, and by that, we mean crafts and similarly fun and frivolity. Take the tour of our picks, or just jump right into the gallery below.

Show and Tell is all about fan stuff, so long as it's Nintendo-related. Show and Tell: We salute you, Game Boys

We've said goodbye to the GBA, but it's not dead yet, and never will be if these people have a say. Modders and artists keep systems alive and relevant even after everyone else has forgotten about them. The Game Boy name and changing face has been a favorite of modders for some time, and today for Show and Tell, we're going to celebrate a small part of that.

Jump right into the gallery below if you're so inclined, or take the guided tour.

Show and Tell: Epic

We're taking a little break from our regular format this week in order to do something very simple: make you jealous as hell. Reader John has some good stuff -- hardware, gear, extras -- but not so much that it's really notable. We do like the plush Kirby, though. No, what brings us here today, agape and agog, is his collection of DS games, which stood at 209 titles when he sent in these pictures, with more on the way.

So today, John, we salute you, O Buyer of Games. And, uh, got anything we could borrow?

Show and Tell: Hook it

There's no denying that many of the best DS accessories and Nintendo crafts we've seen have come courtesy of someone's mad crochet skills. From cases to bits of cutesy fluff, there's a lot that can be done with a crochet hook and a little yarn. This week, we're going to take a longer look at the magic behind some of our favorite Nintendo crafts. Take the guided tour, or just jump right into the gallery below.

Show and Tell: Painted love

We talk a lot about crafts in this space, but not so much about art. After reader Karl sent in his Tetris-inspired painting, however, we couldn't resist taking the time to track down some other artistic efforts thoughtfully rendered by (Nintendo) gamers. There's a lot out there -- drawings, sculpture, beadcraft -- but this week, Show and Tell is all about paintings. And we're not the only ones thinking about them, either.

Start the tour here or jump into the gallery below to see Karl's painting, and the others that caught the collective DS Fanboy eye.

Show and Tell: For the love of a character

A big part of Nintendo (and gaming) fandom seems to be linked to the appreciation -- nay, love -- of certain characters, and that's what we're exploring in this week's edition of Show and Tell. It's all about characters and the things we do in honor of them. Take the guided tour, or jump all willy-nilly into the gallery below.

Show and Tell: Early but eerie

In the fine tradition of American retailers, we'd like to get started on Halloween a little early this year. We've got pumpkins, costumes, and parties -- all things just ripe for you to undertake yourself once the holiday rolls around. Doing something gaming-related yourself? Make sure you let us know!

Also, hey -- if you're looking to get started early on your spooky plans this year, maybe some of these will help get the (ooshy gooshy layers of) brain cranking out some ideas.

Show and Tell: Dress from the best

In last week's edition of Show and Tell, we saw a little Zelda cosplay, and you know what? We see Zelda cosplay all the time. Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy -- while these series make for some great cosplay opportunities, frankly, they get old. The DS has a library rife with interesting characters who also happen to be from great games, and we want to see people dressing up like them. To that end, we scoured the 'net to find a few cosplay pics inspired by some of the best handheld games we've ever played. Drop in here to take the guided tour, or jump right into the gallery below.

Show and Tell: No one has to know

Maybe sometimes, you don't really want to flaunt your status as a gamer. Maybe you like to do so sometimes, or with certain groups of friends, or maybe you just like being mysterious. No matter your reasons, if you have any interest in keeping your true love at least a little hidden, then this week's Show and Tell should provide you with lots of ideas for keeping your hobbies close to your chest. Take the guided tour, or, if you're feeling reckless, jump directly into the gallery below.

Show and Tell: Put it on

Click to read about this pouch

Geek crafts often start with things you can put on your own body, or on the "bodies" of the things you care about (like your DS!). From jewelry to clothes to cases, we've seen a lot of wearables in the history of Show and Tell, so for the second week in our new format, it only seemed sensible to revisit one of the most popular types of fan-made objects. If you need a thing to put on another thing, you've come to the right place! Take a tour of our latest finds, or dip directly into the gallery below.

Show and Tell: Recipes for awesome

Good news -- we're expanding Show and Tell a little to include not only your personal creations (though these are, of course, our favorites), but all sorts of interesting fan-created things we find in the wide world of the internet. Each week, we'll show off a new set of Nintendo-inspired projects, and this week, we're starting with the basics: recipes and ingredients. Every creation has to begin somewhere, after all. Your journey can start right here.

Show and Tell: Pokemon, piece by piece

The LEGO master Lwelyk is at it again, but this time, his work is back in Pokémon form. He's recreated an army of critters, people, and more from Nintendo's mega-franchise, You've got the expected Pikachu, of course -- what collection of Pokémon anything would be complete without Pikachu? -- but there's a lot more, too. You can get a glimpse of some of the creations in the gallery below, or check out the full site for even more Pokémon.

It's not the first time Lwelyk has tackled awesome video game mosaics. Which do you prefer: the Pokemans, or his Link's Awakening mosaics?

Show and Tell: It's never final

This week, to celebrate the release of Final Fantasy IV, we're dedicating Show and Tell to the series as a whole. While FF swag is not nearly as ubiquitous as Zelda gear (at least around here), we did get a few interesting submissions from Final Fantasy fans.

Missed our call, but have some fantastic items you want to show off? No worries -- we'll still take photos of your Cecil cosplay, because that's just how we do it. Don't be shy about sending in your submissions!

Show and Tell: Surviving Civilization Revolution

This week is a bit of a departure from the regular Show and Tell format, but if you think about it, we're not really making much of a turn. We've celebrated the products of all sorts of fandom in this space, but there's one devoted group we haven't addressed: the writers of guides and walkthroughs and FAQs of all sorts.

Maybe you've looked a few things up now and again: a short cut, a question about deleting a save, or a hint when you were stuck. Guides are freely available, and there are all different sorts ... and most of them are written by just plain folks. So why are we bringing it up? The folks at WiiHD recently put out a preview of sorts for the recent release Civilization Revolution -- a preview that includes vital game information. There's no Civilopedia in the DS version of the title (for the uninitiated: the massive information files common in Civ games). Even veteran Civ players might miss the information in the new handheld for its descriptions of unit capabilities, terrain types, and resources.

Luckily, fans have swept in to fill the void. WiiHD isn't the only site working to provide information to new (and old) Civilization Revolution players. We've got a list of a few of the guides after the break, and we offer our hearty thanks to the people who work to put them together. That's really all this week is about: the people who take the time to help others with their gaming. Next week, we'll be back to the stuff.

Show and Tell: It's-a room!

The only thing better than playing video games is pretty much living in one. When Antoinette sent this one into us, it was an immediate lock for today's fan spotlight. Not only is redoing a room all in Mario Bros. decor the ultimate in fanboyism, it's also just really cool -- and this particular take on it is tremendous. Forget the decals, folks; this is the real deal, complete with 3D blocks you can slam your head into.

Check out a selection of shots from the project, or hit up her page for even more! And don't forget: we're still looking for all your Final Fantasy swag. Figures? Game collections? Cosplay? Snap a few pics and send 'em in to us at showmeit [at] dsfanboy [dot] com. Of course, we're still interested in regular submissions, too.
