Final Fantasy IV boxart gets final

Famitsu dropped a megaton on us: Final Fantasy IV boxart. We know, we fell down when we found out about it, too. In fact, our bottom still hurts from the force at which it slammed to the ground.

Personally, we're liking the character grouping in the center, but could do without all of the blue everywhere. We understand it's cloudy, but sheesh. Toss some color in for us outside of Japan, please!

Modder cuts SNES down to size

Until that fine day when hell freezes over we can play Virtual Console games on the DS, our solutions for portable SNES games are few (beyond any existing GBA versions, of couse). Barriers like that exist for modders to break, however, and that's exactly what one intrepid engineer did with an extra SNES he had lying around. It took a bit more than that, though; not only did he gut the elderly system, but he also incorporated a PSOne LCD ... oh, and a hand-crafted wooden case. Together? They form a semi-portable, mostly-handheld, mobile SNES you can carry around and show off. Head past the break to see it in action.

Become the Dr. Frankenstein of the DS world

Let's get down to business: you can rebuild it. You can make it stronger. You can fix your own DS. Not that you would, since Nintendo has such amazing customer service, but the relative inexpensive price of the handheld means that you can feel free to tinker and disassemble your old one with no fear and get your learn on, as you purchase a newer model to keep you warm at night and actually play games. Replacing a screen, fixing a broken hinge and just about any other major overhaul you could need to do to your DS is covered in this guide.

Handy, eh?

Space Invaders Extremely Expensive Luggage

Yoshida & Co. know how to sell bags to nerds: put game imagery on them. We've never cared enough about luggage to choose any but the cheapest and nearest-to-our-hand suitcases, but now we kind of want some luggage -- because of how it looks!

There's approximately negative infinity chance of us getting any of the items in the "Porter" Space Invaders line. Judging by the prices of Yoshida's Playstation collection (PSP case and strap: $205), we'd be better off keeping Yoshida from invading our wallet. We'd choose a copy of Space Invaders Extreme over a bag with some invaders on it.

Readers' Choice: The best of 2007

It was a good year for games with titles beginning with the letter "P" -- at least, according to you guys. When asked, you didn't hesitate to rattle off some of your favorite titles of the year, from Phantom Hourglass to Puzzle Quest, and now the time has come to crown the winner. Just to make things interesting, we're allowing you to choose more than one game -- and to vote more than once (though only once per day). So get in there and duke it out, DS fans. There's a title at stake.

Tomorrow, we'll take a look at some of the year's other great games, those selections that didn't receive quite as much attention when we asked you to name your favorites, but all the same, games that are deserving of a little extra time in the spotlight.

What's your pick for the best game of 2007?
Bleach: Blade of Fate
Contra 4
Etrian Odyssey
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Picross
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords

New Advance Wars images show off new COs, new belly buttons

Supplementing its latest preview of Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, GameSpot has posted over twenty screenshots, faction emblems, and commanding officer portraits for the turn-based strategy title. Among the new cast of COs are two similarly designed gothic lolitas (possibly sisters?), a nefarious scientist with watercolor stains on his labcoat, and what could possibly be Advance Wars' first black CO. Also worth noting is the leather-clad redhead who looks a lot like an older version of Sami.

The darker palette, reportedly "heavier" soundtrack, and serious expressions on the COs really reflect the series' new mature direction. -- we can't wait to see how much further away Intelligent Systems will take the game from its lighthearted roots after having killed off 90% of the world's population. You can preview the new images and COs yourself with the convenient gallery we've embedded below. As promised in our headline, there are plenty of belly buttons -- both male and female -- for you to appraise.

DS Daily: OMGWTF with us

Yesterday we took a look at some of the weirdest DS-related games and stories of 2007. We got to mention things like Doki Doki Majo Shinpan and Spanish for Everyone again, which meant that we had a great time. But we couldn't touch on every bizarro story that crossed our "desks" in 2007. We didn't discuss the BioWare Sonic RPG, for example (in that case, it was because we didn't want to be murdered).

What was your favorite DS-related WTF moment this year? Did some random training game come along that got you L'ing OL? Or was something advertised in a way that, maybe, it shouldn't have been? We want you to join in on the fun!

Space Invaders rings abduct our jewelry-loving hearts

We've already shown you some nice Pac-Man bling, but how about something to celebrate the upcoming Space Invaders Extreme? These adorably geeky rings were made by Toy Me Milano (handcrafted, of course, out of sterling silver).

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a convenient place online for you to purchase them. However, since A + R carries the Toy Me line, it might be worth checking back there now and again if you're interested and can afford to blow hundreds of dollars on a ring.

Watch the prologue of Mother 3 ... in English!

We've informed you about the Mother 3 fan translation project before, and now it's time for you to enjoy some of the fruits of Starmen.net's labor. The project is not completed yet, but the team has at the very least finished translating and coding the prologue of the game. You can watch it in the video above (spoilers, obviously), without even having to worry about downloading any unauthorized ROMs or being involved with any yarrrrrring.

The video will also help you further acquaint yourselves with Lucas, who will be showing up as a playable character in one of Nintendo's most anticipated Wii games, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

From what we've seen, Mother 3 has a certain charm about it, and we can see how fans would be so dedicated in their efforts to bring the game to English speakers. Now, if only Nintendo had the same dedication.

Keep a tight leash on your stylus

They're much less interesting (and much less offensive) than the styli we featured in our anti-gift guide last week, but Keys Factory's colorful Touchpen Leashes have two things going for them:
  1. Small grooves near the tip of the stylus for increased gripability
  2. An extendable, coiled strap that ties onto your Nintendo DS, ensuring that the stylus is never far from your system
If you have a habit of forgetting to slip your stylus back into its slot and losing it shortly afterwards, you might actually find this trinket useful! Otherwise, you could always hang it on your Christmas tree as an ornament and a sign of your supreme tackiness. The Touchpen Leashes sell on Play Asia for about five bucks each and come in five different flavors: Orange, Mint, Brown, Peach, and Melon. Stretch past the break to preview a couple of those other variations.

Rune Factory 2 screens give us deja vu

As we see more and more Rune Factory 2 screens, it's becoming pretty evident that the game is going to be almost exactly like its predecessor, only with slightly altered characters and possibly a kind-of-different storyline.

Does the prospect of an extremely similar game excite you Rune Factory fans, or was one time around enough? Since we loved the first game so much, we're going to go with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mantra, although it'd be nice to see a few more changes made to the sequel.

You can check out some more screens that probably won't surprise you after the break.

Release schedule announced for Ring of Fates, The World Ends With You

Square Enix unveiled its release strategy for early 2008 today, keeping its games on our minds and reminding us to plan our spring budgets accordingly. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates, the four-player co-op ARPG, ships out to North American stores on March 11, 2008, almost seven months since its debut in Japan. With that long of a delay, we're hoping for some added content with the US release (e.g. online features with more depth than moogle-trading).

As for The World Ends With You (a.k.a. It's a Wonderful World, Subarashiki Kono Sekai), Square Enix plans to bring the stylized romp through Tokyo's Shibuya district stateside around "spring 2008." You can check out screenshots and artwork for both games in the galleries we've dropped below. Still missing from Square Enix's schedule: Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift, Dragon Quest IV, and Dragon Quest IX.

Duke Saraie's Healthy Buying Extra Stuff Navi

We were idly browsing Amazon.jp when we happened upon four special-edition bundles for Duke Saraie no Kenkou Walking Navi, the adorably insane walking training game (which, coincidentally, just came up in discussion this afternoon). The Special Duke Set includes the game, two Duke Saraie towels, a zipper pouch, a Dukes Walk wristband, a pochette (basically a little plastic pocket, but pochette is so much more euphonious), and, best of all, a Duke t-shirt. The bundles are divided into "pink" and "gold" versions: the pink version includes a pink shirt and pochette, and the gold version includes a gold pochette and a black shirt.

The bundles are further divided into "face" and "torso" versions, which differ in the design on the shirt. The "face" version, featuring Duke's face and an I <3 WALK graphic, is nice, but we prefer the dandy pose and "Beauty Smile DUKES WALK Health Willingly Body" on the "torso" version.

These bundles are all available on Amazon for 11,550 yen ($102.45) though they're limited to 100 bundles in each variety. Meanwhile, the standalone game is available at a discount, which leads us to question the wisdom of releasing the expensive bundles.

Best Buy offering $10 gift cards with purchase of DS Lite

If you're in the market for a DS Lite to bestow upon a good friend this holiday season (or, maybe you're anticipating gift money and want to finally get one yourself or upgrade), then Best Buy might be the place you want to hit up. They're offering a $10 gift card with the purchase of any DS Lite system. Nice.

Only problem is that their website shows all of the DS Lite units sold out online. That's not a huge problem, however. If you head in-store, you can get the same offer (we called our local store to confirm), so if you find one sitting on the shelf (odds are against you right now, we're afraid), then you're in luck. Other problem: the offer expires in three days, on the 20th.

Final Fantasy IV screens: just like importing, without the actual game

This week, Japanese gamers will be able to get their hands on the much-updated Final Fantasy IV. Unless you're importing, you've got quite a wait ahead of you before you can share in that joy, but we thought these screens might soothe the pain a bit. Check out our updated gallery below for a peek at the unlockable ability-absorbing character and more.
